I think the reasoning behind it is that people might not want to walk around with "Hacker News" on a t-shirt.

Chrome actually already has this built in, too. If you close your window, you'll get a browsable "x tabs" entry in your browsing history. An additional 20-30 MB of memory could be saved by not installing this extension.

As long as ads are in the markup, they can be blocked. It might take a hand-crafted CSS selector, but that's nothing impossible.

I don't know any F# either, but I know that in Ruby the order of files does matter. When you define a class that inherits from a class that lives in another file, you'll have to require that one first.

I just use a piece of paper. For coding I use comments and a git alias (git todo) that returns the comments. todo = !git grep --color=always --no-index --exclude-standard --heading --break --ignore-case -e ' FIX: *' -e ' TODO: *'

What I find strange is that this story even exists. If OP truly wanted to live in solitude, truly didn't want to be bothered by others, this story would have never been written. Why even bother? I'm not suggesting it is a cry for help (thou

Writing sensible HTML is optimising for machines. The Google algorithm runs on machines, so they'll like it and benefit from it. Browsers, screen-reader, future colleagues will also like it and benefit from it. Calling this search engine op

I really like his articles on HTTP APIs. I learned quite a lot from them. What he writes makes a lot of sense, except for the "HATEOAS" part. What he consistently doesn't tell us is why it's necessary and how exactly we're supposed to i

This is pretty awesome and I can't quite explain why. It seems to have a similar quality to the things the people in /r/asmr like. The only thing I miss is the ability to view more if I find something interesting. Perhaps this restriction i

I was just thinking recently how amazingly not-outdated A List Apart's design looked, despite it being really quite old.

I can imagine this being useful to explain how a "difficult" UI element works. It seems easy to set up, I like that. The way it's used in this demo, though, I found it's very distracting from the actual content. All my attention went to th

He stripped Bootstrap of the functionality not included in Helium and compressed that. The README most likely lists the compressed version of the full Bootstrap library. 5.8kb is impressive, though.

This makes me just sad. It might not be a problem for you personally, but it is for the majority of the rest of the people. Hell, even Hacker News isn't as fast as I'd like it to be on my connection.

I'd take the 6 lines of vanilla javascript any day over loading the full jQuery library to get away with writing only a single line. If jQuery isn't use anywhere else on the page, that is.

I find this site to be designed rather poorly, especially for a project you'd expect good design of. - I find the icons in the bar on the top to be rather *ambiguous. I don't immediately know what purpose they serve, save for the + icon. So

Terrible decision. A tweet is just a string of 140 characters or less on a web page. Rules already exist for citing web pages, they seem to work fine.

No need to get all riled up about it. It's just a heads-up, don't follow the advice in this article if you're working on something that needs to deal with time on the seconds level. Obviously you don't need to go trough all that trouble if

I get that some of the commands are meant to have some connection with "the trees concept", but I doubt these terms are easier to remember than standard git comments. Some are much clearer though, especially switch, sync and publish.

I find this a pretty weak argument against the tl;dr. "tl;dr" has become a noun, that means one-line / extremely short summary. Language sometimes grows like that. A better argument against the tl;dr would be that the piece you're writing i

I think the people in group 1 didn't set F.lux up correctly. Twenty seconds is too short of a transition time. If the same people are complaining about paper and other objects having the "wrong" colours at night, you might be onto something

I used to have the same issue as you. F.lux emulates an undergoing sun. That doesn't happen in 20 seconds. Set the transition time to Slow. Also select the right type of lighting. If none of the types match your lighting, juggle a bit with
