I can think of a few reasons. One is that Apple want to minimize cruft and crap bloating the install. I think my fresh install weighed in about 6 GB or so. Very nice, just 20% of a 30 GB drive. Another is that software still built with old

Totally agree with your last sentence. This is an EPIC review, and drove me to clear some diskspace and buy and install Lion. I like it so far, some nice touches, but there really are some serious usability issues, including discoverability

Gosh that's really neat. This is another arrow in the quiver for Javascript as the assembly language of the web. The bonus is that it's a very nice little language, becoming highly performant, and universally available.

Yes, and maybe with the side-effect of getting a truer read on reaction versus the reaction to experiments under a google banner. Nonetheless it may make google a less fun place to be if they do drop a bunch of people, and they surely will

Aren't there already cheap composting toilets that safely and relatively odorlessly compost human waste, without he assistance of a bunch of grant-hungry, plasma torch-wielding scientists. If I recall, you can't pee in them due to ammonia,

Kinda sad, but for my book-buying habits, used books on Amazon have killed my fiction buying, and NoStarch, Manning etc., have killed my bricks&mortar tech-book binges.

Why is Twitter wounded? Twitter is essentially friction free in use, and has a lot of momentum as a single-purpose destination. On the other hand, Facebook has felt increasingly intrusive, facial recognition etc., and I already gave up on i

Damn, I was thinking the same thing too! TweetMachine does look like a pretty neat webapp. I'm not a big enough Twitter user, but if I was promoting an app through Twitter, I'd certainly regard $20/month as likely a solid investment. You mi

Yes, both redesigns appear to take massive steps backwards in terms of contrast and information density, and to add insult to injury, promote one random design element, Compose in the case of Gmail, to a giant non-standard ugly colored 'but

It always seemed self-evident to me that to attain something like human intelligence, machines would have to share human human visual and auditory senses and be bootstrapped to a point where some great influx of knowledge could take place.

Any reason why this, very clean-looking site, won't run without javascript enabled? A form with a button really should fallback to simple HTML if javascript is not available, though obviously this doesn't preclude you from tweaking the site

If Google+ fills a need for people, especially allowing people fine-grained, easy-to-use control of what is shared to who, then it should succeed. Facebook is the big target that most people perceive, but surely LinkedIn is a huge target al

As the article says, that was just a hypothesis. There's no mention of tracking insulin levels, only blood sugar. And what's more, type diabetes is described in the article as resistance to insulin. I can think of at least one further hypot

This is a wild idea, but there is precedent in the example of the dual-graphics systems. That said, I'd be very surprised if Apple implemented this initially in the MBA first. Maybe the MBA will move to A5, then down the road, the high-end

I support keeping the scores hidden, but using the scores to hide inappropriate, or spammy comments. Of course, what seem to be missing is a way to highlight comments that have been consistently voted up within the thread.
