Yeah. That was awful. It occurs to me that anyone lost in the wilderness, due to reliance on incomplete navigation info, is probably not prepared for adventure. I might not have thought to bring a satellite-capable Personal Locator Beacon (

To get a sense of the industry in 1992, browse through BYTE Magazine from that era. There are quality scans available to read online via Archive.org — I find this index to be useful but I’m not sure how up to date it is: https://

Fish or no fish, my kids were themselves even before the moment they took first breath. I audited some embryology, neuropsychology classes in college. Still seems like a miracle, how the kids arrive... (I won't argue about the magic mo

One last bit, to address the fear factor: Two things about Earth are quite amazing: our atmosphere and Earth's magnetic field. Earth has a solid iron and nickel inner core, surrounded by fluid iron nickel outer core. The motion of the

If you're reading this, then this Gamma Ray Burst is not going to hurt you. Gamma ray bursts were first detected by satellites that had been designed to watch for nuclear weapons on Earth. They kept reporting super high energy radiati

I have used Flipboard forever, since Google Reader (RSS) was googlized. I agree that it's chock full of clickbait.. I use it in sort of a ritualistic form of reading the news, by sorting the articles into piles. So not only reading som

Can't hold more than roughly $5000 of real assets and qualify for Medicaid (subsidized healthcare). Keeping that cash in the mattress is a very real option for many people with huge responsibilities (child care) and very little power.
