Anecdotal but a relative of mine used Zantac pretty much daily for many years. Died of pancreatic cancer in their 50s.

Once on a flight headed west I happened to look out the window and just then another plane flew beneath the plane I was on headed north-ish and quickly off into the distance. I remember thinking two things: 1. It was far away from us so qui

The illegals drugs question never made sense to me. It’s asking you to admit to something that won’t necessarily show up on a criminal background check if you haven’t ever been caught. Assuming you have been caught or are still using, other

Pretty sure some airbnbs don’t even clean between guests. I’ve had some iffy experiences, and because of the consistently issues, it’s why I prefer hotels now unless there’s no other option.

My spouse used TikTok for a while on the app. I can’t remember if they logged in or not (I never used it), but the videos it recommended where kinda shocking. It would recommend reviews of a fridge we had bought, but hadn’t explicitly searc

At big companies with internal mobility, switching teams at the right time is a skill. This has positives but also the potential for bloat.

Lived abroad for a while in a country I didn’t speak the language in at first. Felt so much better when I didn’t get the normal “Ad” dose day to day just from casually watching TV. (Very anecdotal)

Yeah this is what I’ve seen at previous companies. Basically, they need enough headcount for it to not eventually proceed to full layoffs. It actually seems beneficial if you meet the tenure requirements, are still relatively young, and hav

Genuinely curious why Meta (other big companies) hired so much during the pandemic? Did one companies make a strategic business decision to hire more based on project needs, and other companies followed on in a copy cat way? I guess maybe m

Are employees able to “take” a layoff even if they don’t receive an email telling them they are among the affected group?

This exact thing happened at a previous job of mine. All workers at a specific site were laid off and later management had to hire back some very important workers who had been working there.

I would say “hiring big” in the context you mention is nowhere near the level of hiring mentioned in the parent comment.

Kind of a blanket comment and seems a bit spiteful and unfair. Granted interviews at those companies could use a refresh and there are probably “leetcode” programmers there for sure, but there’s also plenty of talented developers at those c

Like any job, it’s probably a small percentage of the workers producing most of the results. I know at my job it’s pretty obvious who is actually consistently working but somehow it isn’t obvious to management or just harder to prove.

At previous places I’ve been at it seems like it’s easier for higher ups to just blanket fire people and then rehire the important ones once people in the know complain. Not super efficient but definitely faster and comical in a depressing

Happens so much more often than you think. Have actually seen it with the exact same language (Java->kotlin) on an existing service. I don’t really recall any valid reasons being given for the switch (better support for concurrency etc).

I could see this type of technology being used at some point in the future to essentially algorithmically generate content (movies, tv shows, etc) for viewers to watch or engage with. I wonder if it leads to extremely customized content whe

I attended a conference a few years back where a lead ML/data scientist at a big company you’ve heard of and probably use said the dislike button was ignored in favor of this: did you watch and engage with the content.
