Seconded. Today’s “narrow”applications are quite wide compared to the expert systems of decades ago. I wouldn’t say we are in a second AI winter when cool new applications of DNNs pop up frequently on HN.

Adding on to what you are saying, it depends on what one's objectives are. Books do a great job at exposing concepts but mastery is only gained by experience. If I read a book on pottery, but I never apply those concepts, it doesn'

It's inspiring. I consider Kurzweil, Diamandis, etc. to view the impact of technology with wildly rose-colored glasses. I view this as one possible trajectory of our future - being on the extreme positive end, whereas a very negative o

That is a good point to make. If the development data can lead to exfiltration of higher privacy data then I would define it as "more sensitive" and take that into consideration, this particularly applies to config information req

Agreed. This pretty much applies with any data & tool. If the data is extra sensitive, make extra sure the tool you are using is secure. If your data is for dev purposes only, the tool doesn't have to be validated as thoroughly.

As a quick note, no affiliation whatsoever on my part - I've had great success running online meetups on the LGPL project bigbluebutton. Hope it helps some members here with their pain point. https://bigbluebutton.org

Happy to see work by Mackenzie Child. His design for developers course was really helpful when I was trying to build a webpage from scratch with just an engineering background. [1] https://mackenziechild.podia.com/design-for

Great idea! Love the idea of creating apps that promote concentration rather than diminish it.

Just read the book "Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English" and he mentions the practice of Kasina. This app definitely made me think of that chapter. I think there's a lot to be explored in how technology can work with mindfuln

A bit outside of the "work" domain, but I've found BigBlueButton to be a really powerful tool for hosting webinars and online teaching [1]: https://bigbluebutton.org/

Businesses that rely on walk-in customers will have to go for what looks like more than a month with little to no income. Same thing with travel related industries, surely over-leveraged portfolios exacerbated the problem but there are many

Completely agree. I would rather have hierarchies determined by free-market forces rather than a state-organized system. Corporate monopolies should be deterred by the state, but trying to cap individual success via something like a wealth

"The best" is pretty subjective based on what one is looking for in a job. Not everyone gels with all company cultures. It's great that you like working for Google and have found a good fit. Some features I like in workplace
