I'd argue that who's at the helm has a direct influence over whether a company follows a changing market and grows with it or stagnates (or fails).

I have some influence over certain hiring decisions at a startup. I'd look at experience like that and think "this guy is probably pretty awesome." The MS name might be a bit tainted, but there's no doubt that they have a lot of very talent

I think cap and trade has at least one major flaw: Unless every country is participating equally, activities that create a lot of CO2 will simply be outsourced to countries without the regulations. With CO2 emissions being a global problem,

I like to use Windows for my dev environment, but I code for Linux systems. When I used 32-bit Windows, I used pubuntu to run an ubuntu server inside Windows without using a VM. It was nice and fast and worked well aside from a few networki

Chrome's developer tools are still lacking in some areas. I'm a backend dev responsible for maintaining an API used primarily by a flash client. When something goes wrong, Firebug's net tab let's me quickly see what calls were made, what wa

Do you know how memcached does it? Do they pay the performance overhead, or do they cheat in some way? I don't think perfect LRU is needed, but the general idea behind LRU works /very/ well for a memcached style cache. Trying to achieve som

I agree with Larry Wall on this particular point, but I'd love to see further examples illustrating the principle here.

Redis isn't a direct competitor to memcached. The great thing about Redis (disk-backed cache) is actually a liability if you're using it like an L2 cache which is how memcached is intended to be used. To be clear: in memcached you can effec

I would argue that tabbed or multi-windowed browsing is most important on limited resource and low bandwidth devices. The main advantage of opening a tab/window in the background is not having to wait for it to load; the longer the wait, th

The Lowes self checkout is annoying because you have to switch back and forth from the touch screan to the credit card pad thing several times, so by the time it wants me to sign, I just write something vulgar. It's never been a problem.

Define easily. We have no idea what the Adobe Flash codebase looks like, but given its age and complexity, it's probably pretty hairy. And it was never designed to be open sourced, so there probably weren't any efforts made to keep propriet

It frustrates me to no end that SOAP is the face of RPC. SOAP is pretty much the worst thing ever, but there are RPC alternatives that don't have SOAP's problems and are less weird (i.e. don't attempt to adhere to an impossible ideal). I hi

I think you can find many worse habits employed by software managers, such as not propeerly planning projects or speccing out features. I think referring to people as resources is pretty common practice in any industry. If you don't like it

Can anyone elaborate on how JIT is new to 2.2 and how that compares to how <=2.1 handles it? I haven't touched Java in ages, but I thought JIT was a fundamental part of how Java works, so I'm a bit confused.

I don't think you have much to worry about, the N1 is hardly going to become obsolete the moment a better Android phone comes out. My droid wasn't obsoleted by the N1 and likely won't be obsoleted by an N2 either; afaik there aren't any app
