It added a lot more stability over win8 and removed a bunch of terrible UX. Additionally it added to a lot of the great ideas of windows 7. I can’t recall any off the top of my head, but I remember trying to do things in 7 and being surpris

I know very few people who have paid for excel specifically. everyone pays for MS office, albeit because it includes excel, but in an workplace setting the main thing you're paying for is outlook/exchange the fact that word/e

Excel is more than just a hammer it’s the fork that is in every single drawer of every single company/org in the world. It’s not about every problem looking like a nail, it’s that, nobody had to pay for this fork, somehow everyone has

Best part is, that “feature” doesn’t exist in windows 11, they rolled that out knowing it would be gone in 6 months. Someone in marketing needed their win.

Regarding 2, we’re rapidly approaching the expiration date on any relevant patents from the early 00s. I wonder what software will look like 10 years from now when all the great ideas can be commoditized…

Windows 11 really is shaping up to be the vista version. Look forward to windows 12 which will have all the good features without the annoying ones. Microsoft really has a lock on the good-bad-good cadence.

If you don’t believe Tiktok is a national security threat you are hopelessly naive. MyFitnessPal, Strava, etc are threats to national security and they’re US based, but you think that Tiktok isn’t because someone you don’t like said it is?

RCN: $44/m 1gbps/50mbps down/up Comcast: $70/m 1gbps/30mbps down/up Chicago Both are copper. RCN is slowly rolling out fiber but I think it’ll still be asymmetric.

The fit for Bitcoin trades isn’t perfect, but I’ve seen fits like that used to disprove fraud. So I’m not sure that one graph really proves much. A while back I used benfords law on Chicago city salaries which are public… it wasn’t pretty.

This is one place where I’m not so concerned for the devs. It’s a brave new world for them and they’ll figure it out. If it means that consumers keep a little more money in their pockets bec they didn’t need that stuff anyway, so be it.

Put another way, the modal IQ on HN is likely higher than 100. So I have a hard time taking someone seriously when they claim they have an avg IQ and think getting into FAANG is easy. That just means they have no clue how much smarter they

My understanding is that for any given age the average IQ is 100. Are you seriously suggesting that you would score 100 on an IQ test? I highly doubt that considering that your manager is so motivated to hire but simply can’t.

One of the more “hn” comments I’ve seen lately. Assuming every person in the world is an ivy league graduate, with a high IQ, and A+ coding talent is a little bit out of touch with reality.

Not a big fan of this, our home computers are all less than 2tb, at this point it looks like it’s cheaper to find someone else to do the backups who isn’t “unlimited”. The biggest selling point to me for backblaze was set it and forget it +

Every default sub is toxic these days. Toxic in exactly the way tumblr was. Both due to moderators and the people who spend the most time there. I would venture to say any sub with >100k users is also pretty toxic.
