This applies when interacting with children, or any family members. My folks send me a text just saying "I have some bad news." and I immediately assume that yet another relative has passed away. But it's usually some nonsens

Ah, but that's a reasonable price for something as low-key exotic vintage as an '80s F-150. They're beautiful cars, just like in the article photos. A decent quality Power Ram 250 can go for $35k (and they'll run for ano

How much would it cost in total parts/labor to find someone to buy and restore a 1978-1995 F-150 with new paint job and replacement of rusty parts, and then add this motor and a ridiculous amount of batteries? I'd sign up tomorrow

I would bet my life savings on the fact that storage per normalized price will grow exponentially (with some tau) after 500 years. Supply/demand with gradually developing technology is one of most guaranteed forces in humanity, and peo

I didn't say there's a good chance the Internet Archive will be around in 500, but it possibly will.

Host the content/pages on the Internet Archive. https://archive.org/ There's a pretty good chance their collection (and possibly the organization themselves) will be around in 500 yrs. 1 EB in 100 yrs will be triv

Start a diversified annuity that funds webmasters by contract to perform standard update/migration/backup/payment tasks. Give the annuity to a college, bank, or family to own/manage it based on your bylaws.

These are charts for LTE coverage. You might be more interested in a 3G chart, which is sufficient for safety in wilderness and will have more coverage.

This is the best story I've read all week. More non-techy people should at least know how Google, Apple, Facebook, and Microsoft work (i.e. their business models), and this is a start to put it in perspective for people who don't

This show was so much better than what I see parents letting their kids watch today, such as this seemingly AI-generated spam. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=nursery+rhyme+c... I wonder how this difference wil

I tried recently, but that documentation is insufficient to update a developer application's Activity status. I think they removed some vital information when they replaced it with GameSDK. Perhaps you will have better luck. GameSDK is

If any application developers want to update the "Playing ..." status on Discord, I wrote a C++ implementation that interfaces with Discord's not-very-well-documented IPC API. https://gist.github.com/AndrewBel

Yeah, that's why I assumed it wouldn't help that much. People re-upload 100kB memes all the time, but the bulk would probably be 5MB phone pictures that won't typically be re-uploaded.

I'd imagine Discord uses deduplication, but I bet it doesn't save them 5% storage space.

I'm curious of the 2021 measure of total disk space that Discord consumes. Servers that I'm in share images every few minutes, which must add up pretty quick.

If you like consistency, then you'll like this bill. It sets the legal age of buying cannabis to 21, the same as alcohol.

Yes, alcohol has an effect on developing brains as well, although the brain is less malleable as you approach that age. https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-24173194

The brain is developing until around 25, so if anything, the age should be higher if the intent is to prevent unsafe use.

I doubt this will catch on. What's the incentive for the software companies to add it? I like the `source do-not-track.sh` idea better which defines a bunch of `WHATEVER_NO_TRACK := 1` variables. It could even modify config files for s

Yes, a lot of CVEs follow the form explained in the SQLite article, where you have to already have access to "gain access" in an unnecessarily complicated way. For example, `rm` has a vulnerability where if an attacker runs `rm -r
