What portion of those "subscriptions" are just first payments of a trial users forgot to cancel, and what percentage of employee time is devoted to tweaking the funnel to get more of the same (conversion rate)? This may be cynical

This is great, thanks! This is the first time I hear it explained like this and it just somehow clicked immediately. I now have this (probably wildly incorrect, total layman here) vision of the time dimension of velocity being "a norma

Much like a "desktop" app will always lag behind bare metal software in terms of access to hardware capabilities and runtime efficiency. That's a caricature, but all these platforms provide a variety of scaffolding and securi

Yeah - it's great. I'm rocking a 2008 Nehalem at home, having since doubled the memory to 12GB, upgraded the GPU and replaced a failed PSU. It runs like a champ and my non-techie friends think I'm kidding when I say it's

I agree that most computing can be done easily with 5 year old hardware, or 10 or 15 if you pick your software carefully. But I do know that whenever my 2019 mbp is heating up, it's more likely than not to be the browser (with a rogue

Thank you for the well-argued and rational post. To me, buying 20 years for decarbonization sounds kind of great. So, it's a fallacy to think we could just plant trees and otherwise go on as usual. We just need to be careful about lang

That's awkward because parsing ASTs can't usually be done with a regular language (for most programming languages), so a language-specific parser would be needed on top anyway. This stuff is useful, though, and easy to do in lisp

Good observation. Writing as second author was a very positive factor very early on. I was an assistant to a research fellow from my second year at uni, mostly because of coding skills. Pretty soon they encouraged me to write a pragraph or

You can use double-doubles for near-128-bit floating point [1]. It's much more powerful than 53.53 fixed point you mentioned, but more complicated as well. [1] http://web.mit.edu/tabbott/Public/quaddouble-debi

You could think of a library like this as an argument in a conversation about frontend. One that is demonstrated and backed by an actual implementation. As such, I'd say it is valuable regardless of npm download counts. I'm sure h

The quick-and-dirty light/dark mode flip is to invert and rotate hue by 180deg. However, putting that on <body> taxes most browsers, as they will use an additional buffer to filter pixel data.
