Well. I can only say that now and then I read about new, super clever solutions to js problems ranging from async code to packaging or react. Most of the time that's the first time it occurs to me that X could be a problem, as I'm

Sure you can make an equally good synth without fpgas or dxd. I'm not trying to sell you this design. However it's educational to think about when and how it makes technical sense. I do agree that marketing turns it into brain dam

At 4x you would need something like poly-blep with 24/32-bit fixed or floating point support to generate a nice bandlimited sawtooth. Features like oscillator sync can still cause problems. I recall hearing at Clavia HQ that the origin

Running the oscillators at a ridicilously high rate allows the use of non-bandlimited, trivial algorithms. Band-limiting is not a solved problem, all the algorithms get messy in different dynamic scenarios. As to why design a custom FPGA bi

Religions and cultures generally evolve from very nasty towards less nasty. Of course sometimes there is a big lurch towards nastiness. However, (us?) secular humanists can best help religions become less toxic by inclusion rather than trib

Isn't it a little ironic that Spotify complains about Apple's cut while their entire business model is exactly the same? If anything, they are less fair to artists than Apple is to devs.

So true. I used to have Trillian running on 3 or 4 networks, hardly taxing my late 90s computer. Every time I see Slack I get an urge to close the tab because I can almost feel the browser engine groaning in agony.

I write quite a bit of LaTeX, but I shudder at the thought of browsers embedding it. It is one of the more Lovecraftian codebases I've ever witnessed.

I actually think tourist-y photography reduces the experience of traveling. I realize for someone deep into photogrphy it may be the opposite. I remember going to Tanzania for a safari with my dad when he turned 50. It was amazing and every

The evidence is to the contrary as you said. I just think that the only way to get people to actually do this is to let the markets work it out. I'm not saying, at all, that the "invisible hand" will sort it out by itself.

I agree 100%. I live in Finland; our neighbour, Sweden, was early with carbon tax. Our tax/govt structures are otherwise very similar. Sweden's carbon footprint per capita is roughly 50% of ours.

I lean left and green as much as the next guy, but I believe markets and liberalism can and must be a part of the solution. The really hard part is to work out how to get the environmental externalities priced in. My personal gut feeling is

I'm well aware of the basics of ooo. What GP was proposing involves re-vectorizing a virtual ISA according to hardware width. I'm sure micro-op fusion and register renaming could theoretically be extended to do that. It's the

This sounds quite optimistic. How would microcode deal with allocating registers, or nested data parallelism? You are describing transformations that usually happen fairly early in compiler optimization pipelines, and pushing that down to m

I have experienced two times a leap in productivity that subjectively felt like a game changer. The first was from a baseline of a good MVC kit like Cocoa or pre-QML Qt to the MVVM paradigm, and the second was to React (with ClojureScript a

From the end-user perspective, you are likely correct. I was musing with my PL designer hat on. The difficulty is the huge amount of work that has gone into the entire unix way or developing software. That's the seductive local minimum

This is all good, but I want to point out that threads are not the unsafe bit, the unsafe bit is shared mutable state . If you can use a model where that is not a problem (data flow arch, STM), threads cease to be scary.
