I'm just reading Dawkings Selfish gene and it attacks pretty fiercely against "group selection". But I find it impossible idea that any part of human behaviour could be completely detached from genes. And especially weird if

The good: Scifi demonstrates how outsider perspective is often valuable. The bad: Faster horse problem. You don't leard what people actually want or need. You learn what people might think they might want. For "new" ideas I l

Personally I read Leahy-Smith America Invents Act in completely opposed way. The old system was only used in U.S. and Canada. Which is pretty shitty thing for any patent system. Global coverage is beneficial on it's own right, both for

I used to study construction engineering and now I work in construction. "Waterfall" is still in use and going strong. Applying that directly to coding seems bit stupid. I then swithed major to mechanical engineering, and there &q

During WWII there was somewhat surprizigly unified ship classification and there was hardly any civillian submarines at the time. It was based on tonnage, speed and main gun calibre. Anything smaller than 1000 tons was a boat. Interwar Germ

I think all of these could be used to justify why music has gotten better: 1. Only the most passionate musicians do it as a profession. 2. A producer doesn't have to chase that perfect accordion sound and manage to record it withouht d

Interesting how some themes changed completely. You would never expect to hear "ballad of green berets" as top song anymore. I think there is noticeable deterioration in music quality of the top hit during the past millenia. I gue

You do have choice to go completely against your government. If some unpopular dictator enacts draft, there is going to be loads of guerrilla fighters around. Because now they have to fight anyhow, why not fight for themselves.

No personal armor (so far) is good against blunt trauma. The reason for that is conservation of momentum. Blunt weapons often rely on large amount of momentum. Only thing you can do is to make the armor bouncy. So you can try to turn it int
