I should give that a go, yeah. The gentoo attempt was mostly to see how a modern desktop class linux distro would work on a system that old. Answer: Not very fast!

I (fairly) recently installed modern Gentoo onto my 486DX2-66 box. I think it has 32MB of RAM in there. Boots and works fine for the most part. Compiled tools and utilities work fine for the most part, but trying to run any interpreted code

This reminds me of a fun story. A few years ago at a cool lan + demoparty event called Instanssi they had a local FM radio station dedicated to the event. It was then revealed that hidden in that FM transmission was the private key to a lit

I have JPEGView installed on most of my vintage Mac collection (that can display colors, anyway) I'm pretty sure I wasn't even born when that software was the latest and greatest!

The phrase "...to better understand our [users] and to improve their experience..." always rings alarm bells in my head. It's corporate lingo for "We want to increase profits by selling your private data for as long as w

TL;DR: Enabling the external HDMI connector requires the use of a proprietary blob (DRM malware) and the DDR4 memory controller has a small firmware blob that you need.

FWIW, OpenGL on macOS is deprecated, not removed. This means they ship an ancient version and won't provide support. I messed around for an hour or so, and managed to get it to compile fully on my older macOS 10.12 system. It seems to

SerenityOS does have support for unicode, and the character sets are improving over time.

Sorry about that, I phrased it really poorly. I think I was trying to convey that the project is still somewhat niche, so no one has taken up that effort yet. But you're absolutely right, everything should be accessible.

Take a closer look - SerenityOS doesn't reject all modern stuff. The kernel has plenty of modern security mitigations (pledge(), unveil()), and there is basic high DPI support already. Internationalization and accessibility are very co

That is the part that upsets me the most - there are no viable alternatives. Linux I can get by with, but it's a huge compromise on all fronts except the terminal experience. Windows is obviously out of the question completely.

Perhaps the packagers on your platform went that extra mile to build binary packages. Taking a quick look, the Homebrew formula[0] for ripgrep on macOS just lists a dependency on Cargo (rust) and then seems to invoke the cargo command for i

Homebrew tries to install binaries by default. (They call them bottles) Building from source happens if a suitable 'bottle' isn't available, or when `--build-from-source` is specified with the install command. I know cargo is

Binary releases seem uncommon from my perspective. Every time I go to install a piece of software written in Rust from homebrew, it invariably starts installing some massive Rust toolchain as a dependency, at which point I give up and move
