Umm .. why does this list only contain clones of commercial softwares? I would rather say that high priority projects are the linux kernel, git, myriad python and ruby interpreters etc which are widely used and do contain some design innov

I found this interesting page from a reddit comment : http://www.esva.net/~thom/philkatz.html edit : Its about Phil Katz from the original author of ARC which was the software Katz allegedly modified to produce PKARC.

Man we need an "apple" filter. Most of the apple related news on HN is getting ridiculous while you can still get important apple news on any other news site.

Dell XPS M1330 preloaded with Ubuntu. No hassles of installation at least. In any case whatever notebook you choose, do a bit of research to find out that the wireless card works properly under linux. I have had decent experience with Inte

Thanks for infusing realism into the Erlang hype. As you point out "There is no free lunch". People also frequently tend to forget Amdahl's law when discussing Erlang and somehow assume that "Erlang = Linear Scaling" regardless of algorithm

I feel IBM hasnt really taken Cell to its full potential and it will probably lose the performance crown to x86 in 2-3 years unless IBM gives the performance a badly needed performance boost. GPUs can also beat cell in some tasks.

Sorry for replying a bit late. For FFTs, flops are measured in a standardized way. If you are doing an FFT of length N, the number of flops is counted as 5 N log N no matter how the actual FFT is computed. So, in the case of FFT, really you

I wonder if a GPU might be more suitable for his task. Even the 8800GTX is known to do single precision FFTs at more than 55 Gflops which is an order of magnitude more than even contemporary CPUs let alone P4.

I think ATI will be bought off by someone .. maybe even Intel given that Intel is now developing its own GPUs. On the x86 front, the only possible acquirer for AMD CPU divison seems to be IBM. Sun also bought a x86 startup a few months back
