But that's not at all what happens. First, the plumbing company buys ad space from that morass of companies in the article's diagram. Then the add distribution network decides who sees the ads. And in the specific case we're

But wouldn't it make sense to only do that if the return actually happens? It's not like Amazon doesn't know whether or not the item has been returned.

Note the asterisk, though. Apparently a few shows are contractually obligated to include ads on Hulu, even with the "commercial-free" option.

TiVo is still around and handles OTA just fine, as I understand it. (I use mine with cable and never watch anything live.)

But it's not just ads. I don't want Google Analytics putting cookies on my machine and then tracking every other web site I go to. It's a privacy issue as much as an annoyance at ads.

The "called in error" rate is not pretty rare. It's quite high in my experience. There are a number of reasons: 1) People who owe money often put fake phone numbers on forms so they can't be contacted. They will sometime

While that's true, I've never seen a system that will randomize the spoofed number on every call. We regularly see the same number show up on our caller-ID for weeks on end. In fact, in one case the "I'm calling from Win

I agree completely. I used rover.com once to find a pet sitter and found a great one. I don't need it anymore. Furthermore, they're doing the typical thing that businesses resort to when they're desperate. They're asking

Good luck with that. If you look on a site like Stack Overflow at questions about even languages like C and C++, you'll see developers confusing Xcode with their language. With a name like "Visual F#" it must be 100 times wor

Yes. A friend of mine is currently doing this. They used a fake name and paid with a pre-paid Amex "gift card". They had it mailed to a P.O. Box. I believe they may have used VPN and private browsing while ordering and looking at

Here are some things I've done recently that seemed useful: 1) Rather than ask them to code something, give them some code and have them review it. I opened up a browser and went to code review.stackexchange.com and picked one in the i

One concern I have is that they'll just move this one step further down the road. For example, I believe that you can get the address of a function like dlopen() by manually loading the bundle and looking up the function name (via some

Seriously? I got through the first page and a half of smarmy pop-culture references and couldn't figure out what the heck the author was talking about, so I just stopped reading. More power to you if you understood it!

I'm confused. They included instructions for updating Firefox and Chrome (web browser clients) to remove support for the older cipher suites. I was asking if there was a way to do the same for Safari.

That was my first thought, as well. However, it did say that the FBI agent had a warrant to collect his DNA through a cheek swab and that he would have been compelled to comply had he refused.

One thing that helped me was to move. That's obviously a big step. I was unmarried at the time, no kids, and knew I wanted something different, so I found a job in a new city and just packed up and moved. If that's not in the card

Do you have proof that this type of fraud is occurring? We hear this a lot in the United States about our welfare programs. They find one or two "welfare queens"[1] and claim that the whole system is fraudulent. It turns out that
