Important for what? For interviews? In the real world, inefficient software wins because it appears to do more work. When the slow behemoth has to learn a new trick, you feel like a hero for taming the beast. You get praise when you reduce

I work on embedded devices and no one really cares whether changing a setting takes 30 seconds or 30 milliseconds. It does not matter that most of the RAM is wasted by unnecessary copies of unnecessary data. People still buy these devices a

Most "senior developers" I know don't know much about data structures. Standards are pretty low in the industry. One reason might be that optimizing for memory consumption or handling "large scale data" almost never

I usually like to pay for a premium account on other sites even if I wouldn't have to, but for some reason I don't do it on Reddit. In hindsight, my gut feeling was right, because they are in fact backstabbing butts in seats who s

tl;dr: If you use C++ like Java and don't care about performance at all, it will be half as efficient as hand-optimized C. Which is pretty remarkable actually. In favor of C++. Why didn't the author rewrite it in C++? It's no

If I write the foo function in assembler, it will also be slower than just a+b. The assembler won't be able to inline the function, which makes the C version possibly more efficient. You are comparing apples and oranges.

We will make humans brains more computer-like instead of making computers more human-like. Some day, the last cyborg will replace their remaining flesh with metal. Strong AI the hard way.

The Judgement Day scenario is a strawman. Of course humanity will not be replaced by killers robots over night. When we learn how to connect our brains to computers - without our eyes, ears and hands as bottlenecks in between - humanity

Yes, PVS-Studio is very good and useful for avoiding bugs. No, companies don't really care about avoiding bugs. No one at Samsung will risk delaying the release of the next plastic crap product by fixing any problems. Why would they? D

The main reason for DRM is old people in positions of power who don't get computers. Locking your door helps against physical theft, so why not do "the same" for digital goods? DRM is a cargo cult.
