Code can be complex in any language. TypeScript itself can produce some really complex types. OOP isn’t a bad thing either; it’s just a tool.

Personally I find ?.let et al to be terrible for readability; most of the time you're better off doing a standard != null check. The same with nullable extension functions; they hurt readability. > Null is a valid state, not someth

I really wish you couldn't write extensions on nullable types. It's confusing to be able to call what look like instance functions on something clearly nullable without checking. fun main() { val s: String? = null

That absolutely isn't true at all. There's plenty of contextual information you might want to have saved in a scoped value that are currently saved in thread locals. The application I build currently is multi-tenanted. We store th

Tons of cheaters existed pre-ai too. They'll always exist, whether they use ai or just share copy pasted code from students who attended the semester before. Probably half of my graduating class couldn't program because they cheat

The problem with thread locals is that you need to copy the value into each platform thread. And the expectation of virtual threads is that any platform thread from the pool would end up running them. This is super applicable to any system,

I really think this is where Kotlin is going to excel; multi-paradigm, multi-platform. Scala's community went too hard into FP and type-golfing to make it approachable.

Why would you use GSON for objects that go through steps of state? Why would you mark fields like State as final when it is actually mutable? This just sounds like poorly designed code. Maybe I don't know of your use case, but GSON

This is my problem with Scala. Too many fancy things hidden behind text with no meaning. Why the hell is this ‘r’ instead of something with a name that has meaning like toRegex?

In the Java sense, if you properly utilize JPMS, JLink can cut dead modules and reduce your image size drastically. This obviously of course like you said depends on how "open" your runtime model is. If you're not dynamically

The shell should just have better UX. If 5408 is the id of the command ran... just list that out in the printed table. Powershell and nushell do this really well.

Yeah I'm hopeful for a post-valhalla future now that things are slowly rolling in. There's a lot of stuff that Brian has proposed but has been put on hold!

Scala is not viable. They continue to make breaking changes and the tooling ecosystem can’t keep up with the language changes. It’s a giant mess.

Yes that qualifies as "stuck behind valhalla" for me. Valhalla... truly is Valhalla. Will we ever see it?

Optional is not good at all. It is not enforced by the compiler and optional itself can be null. In hot loops it can allocate like crazy. We need compiler support to enforce nullability and to get null into the type system.

In my opinion the only critically missing feature in Java that Kotlin has are nullable types. It’s been proposed, but is stuck behind Valhalla. Kotlin has a lot of other smaller features that help with conciseness. Like single line methods,

Hot reload has existed for decades. I don’t see how that is missing. I really think the person your replying to really is just showing dissatisfaction that once again someone is trying to force Rust where it doesn’t belong. It’s exhausting.
