Has jpackage been updated to create things that are not installers and don't extract themselves into several files?

Non-trivial, doesn’t work with standard build tooling, and unless something has changed it produces installers that extract into several different files. You don’t just get a standalone statically linked binary that you can hand off.

Using modules and jlink your Java image would be much smaller than 200mb. Full desktop apps with ui’s can get down to 30mb. I’m confused by your disregard of C# AOT. It produces binaries as small as go or rust. 1.1 MB for hello world on lin

Java will never become a player in CLI tooling until build packaging becomes first class. Go, Rust, and other languages are so common because their build tooling is dead simple. You can easily get a single file distributable in a single com

Isn’t the Go version also forcing the callers to deal with the errors by returning them? The swift version just lets the compiler do it rather than manually returning them.

I’m sorry, but null restricted types, string templates, basic json support, and fixing the broken exception system isn’t “fat”. They’re the basics of a functioning language.

Yeah swift is nice! I’ve ranted about how Java should add Swift’s try! and try? for checked exceptions before. I don’t think it’s for me though. It’s very Apple centric and I’m a Windows gamer and PowerShell user at heart.

I'm not sure Kotlin is a hack, but it's growth is directly related to Java not being able to deliver on simple features that would help the day to day lives of developers. So I also can't blame anyone for moving on from the l

I've found that most of the time that if you need to mock, you probably just need to do an integration test.

AFAIK there’s still holes like reflection and you have some work, but if that’s changed that’s really good. I suspect it’ll be hard for C# to escape the stench of “enterprise” though. I’m looking forward to seeing how it shapes out over the
