There is an alternative color space called YIQ that deals with perceived luminescence. I wrote a small function that can tell you given an arbitrary background color, whether white or black text would be most readable. You can checkt it out

Agreed, looking at top marginal rate seems weird, why not look at effective tax rates for the Top 1, 5 and 10% instead?

I hate to be pedantic here, but I think you mean "shill" instead of "shrill". Technically what you did there is called a malapropism, where two similar sounding words are misused because the alternative wording could make sense as well. I a

It isn't short for debugger. A computer "bug" originated when a small moth (aka bug) was caught in a physical relay on the Mark II. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bug#Etymology "Debugging" came from the action of trying to find whe

If you don't want to pay the price they are setting then don't buy the book, it is that simple. I as a producer should be able to set it at whatever price I wish.

IIRC, HN is a place to read articles about things that hackers would find interesting. Google Glasses seems like a fairly cool technology, even if it isn't startup related.

I disagree that craftsmanship is a replacement for agile. To me, being a software craftsman is more about how you write and structure code. Agile is about figuring out what the end product should be and how you get there.

If some rich people make their money "unfairly" then fix that problem independently, you don't need sky high taxes on all rich people to fix that problem. I make a very good living, but I don't cheat anyone out of anything, and I'm sick of

who cares what percentage of the pie someone has, it matters how big the pie is. Suggesting or alluding to redistribution of wealth will inevitably shrink the overall size of the pie.

I'm so sick of people who think that wealth is a zero sum game. It, unequivocally, is not. The fact that Bill Gates has $50 Billion, does not mean that poor people are some how worse off because of it. In fact, it is quite the contrary, poo

I really don't like saying this, but here it goes: Don't hate the player, hate the game. We need real, substantive patent reform in this country.

I'd have to admit that I've kind of felt the same way as Ted. Perhaps I'm getting "old", I'll be 30 in 5 months ;) I'm sure the pace of things will pick back up, I just hope it is sooner rather than later.

HN doesn't show vote totals, but it does sort posts based on the number of votes (descending), so the more popular posts rise to the top, just like the front page.
