I have a bit of a feeling that this will be a point that people in 20 years will consider a turning point in the bubble that we're in now; it's too premature to say whether this is good or bad though. That said, I can't come

Perhaps to summarise further: subjective favouritism (perceived or actual) will harm morale and should therefore be avoided?

'Honestly' grading a kid is tricky, especially because, as you mentioned, a teacher's ethics (or lack thereof) may skew things. I'm not sure if it's the exact word I would use but I agree with the principle that met

> Yes. The question is how do you encourage curiosity and creativity in kids? I'm working on this now, and should be ready to talk more openly soon. More useful data than test scores can be measured in classroom, and I'm curren

The implications in this article that strict = effective are flat-out stupid. A teacher does not have to be hardass to encourage children to have high expectations and to be OK with failure. I think a truly effective teacher, at all levels,

I'm seeing a bit of confusion between correlation and causation, but the full paper seems to make a different point to the article anyway. I only skimmed so I'm not informed enough to summarise. Full study here: http://

Phraseology highlights selected words and is cumulative. Writer Pro dims the 'unselected' words and (I'm assuming) doesn't let you stack word classes. I prefer Writer Pro's execution. I can see it as something that

My understanding of the feature is that you can focus on a specific syntactical category and dim everything else out while you edit. This will let you focus solely on adverb use (for example) and make changes accordingly. Phraseology 2 has

Considering Tarsnap doesn't have a GUI I'd suggest a text-only logo - something like Tarsnap_ for a full logo and then just T_ for social media icons/favicon/128x128. I can put something together but at the end of the da

Looks great! It's probably slightly more iOS-7-ey to replace the hamburger icon with the text 'Menu' - but then you'd have to go the full hog and have a white overlay so that you can color the actionable text. Having a w

Personally I think that it's a bit misleading to lump bugs and questionable design choices under the same 'sloppy' banner. Good quality criticism regarding choices developers and designers have made have lead to some of the b

The message I'm getting from these examples is that designers will need to invest a lot more effort into UX under iOS 7 compared to 6. To me it seems obvious which teams have spent a lot of time reworking their app to fit the language

My startup is indirectly dealing with this - some schools are currently testing out app that helps children (and teachers for that matter) identify and manage emotions. Early signs are that children can be 'prompted' to apply empa

I still don't really get what you're trying to say. Mentioning that a power is contained within a clause of the Telecommunications Act doesn't really mean much. All 594 subsections need to be read in conjunction with each oth

'I don't want to partner up with the wrong person.' This runs both ways. You need to prove to all your potential cofounders that you're the right person to partner with too. They will want to know that you're qualified and interested Do you

tl;dr - Complaints relating to UI's are bound to get more common as the minimalist trend continues. This sucks because a lot of the time complaints will be invalid/mislead and stressful for all involved. Let's kill design trolling before it

Colour schemes are irrelevant to the DCMA as they can't be copyrighted, though they can be trademarked in some circumstances. Either way there isn't a relevant infringement. Hope it wasn't the basis for the DMCA takedown...

I can't help but think this sort of thing is going to happen more and more as we move towards a flat/minimalist UI. I've read comments (not on HN) from people who have endorsed the DMCA takedown because of their personal ethics and morals r
