I think a lot of people in the "I hate crappy code" camp tend to spend too much time trying to fix seemingly crappy code, time that arguably would better be spent fixing other, more important bugs.

Can you identify a few places you interviewed with? Also, are you using a recruiter? I'm going to try to limit my response: I don't consider (1) to be "fake" in the sense that thought-provoking questions aren't meant to be fake. I like as

ordinary dividends are taxed like income. the only difference is that you don't have to pay FICA (social security and medicare) on that money. This year, self-employment social security is 4.2% + 6.2% = 10.4% up to wage base of 106800 and

Note: If it's a C corp you don't have to take salary (iirc only S corps have to declare at least one person taking salary) and you can keep money in the firm (LLCs and LPs aren't structured to do this well), so you don't need to take any mo

Cheap way to expand screen real estate. I find myself diffing 3 files a lot. And these files are 80 characters fixed-width. So to have the three window diff in vim means I would need at least 3 * 80 + 2 = 242 character width, and that doe

with regards to the issue of charging for xcode: xcode 3 is still free :) The business decision that should scare you the most was the killing of the xserve line. Don't try to run a business production platform on a mac.

I'm surprised no one pointed out Growl. There's GNotify for linux but it's nowhere near as polished. And in the growl package, there's an extra called growlnotify, which lets you pipe data from processes and show the output in growl form.

Power through sedgewick's Algorithms in C++: http://www.amazon.com/Algorithms-C-Robert-Sedgewick/dp/02015... Although, tbh, the code coverage is kinda weak, so I would supplement it with a C or C++ discussion (K&R is tough to understa

What is the standard framework for abstracting most of the browser-specific behaviors (like those IEx hacks) away? I'm not even talking about dynamic behaviors; just simple standard HTML / CSS jazz. In 2011 I would hope there would be a si
