The article didn't really make that argument though. It could have gone into things like your strip mining example and that would have been better than a lot of the arguments used.

This is what this article says to me. A poorly researched piece. I'm not unsympathetic to the need to run computing from renewable energy, but this article seems like a stretch, especially when it tries to link in government surveillan

Brief mention of Meta in that article. I had missed that they shut down, though I can't say I am surprised. Their first headset was uncomfortable and lacked the field of view or functionality of the Hololens. It was a cabled only exper

Briar looks very interesting, however it lacks the broadcast mode that Bridgefy has, which I suspect is a major feature for coordinating a protest. It also lacks the ability to use existing contacts (you have to do a QR code exchange).

The first time I read about Monsanto being evil it was in the fiction novel Freedom(TM) by Daniel Suarez (sequel to Daemon). Daniel Suarez had neatly integrated Monsanto suing farmers[1] into the storyline. It's a great (neo)cyberpunk

It's the principle more than anything. I gave LJ my address so they could deliver my magazine (that I paid for) not so they could sell it to someone else.

I used to be a loyal subscriber to Linux Journal and would await every issue. Then I started getting junk mail from (if memory serves me) ACM. When I pressed them about it they revealed that they'd gotten my physical address from Linux

The Cockatoos and other parrots love to get in rooms at various resorts in Australia as well. We had them destroy a packet of chips and spread it around a room while staying on Hamilton Island.

I don't understand the requirement to have either a link or text. Surely it would make more sense to allow someone to explain WHY they're posting something and still have the link be clickable.

A few years ago I got a ~$3500 Amazon bill when someone broke into my account (through keys I'd inadvertently added to GitHub)[1]. I had no expectation of that money being waived, but Amazon did anyway. Since then I've had billing

Without trying to minimize this experience, I can't help but wonder if newer tools and techniques have mitigated some of this problem. For example GitHub pull requests make it much easier to collaborate on one version rather than an up

I can't fathom open source projects and communities using slack as a communication platform. I like slack, it's a great product for business, where you can pay $X for each user in your org. However, OS and non-profit communities q

Really makes me appreciate the ATO (Australia). Free online tax filing has been a thing for quite a few years. You end up with an accountant only if your tax is somewhat complex, which tends to correspond with higher income.

It's offensive and frustrating. I don't understand why people have to try and pull holes in this kind of celebration like there is some conspiracy to promote Katie at the cost of others. If I read it right, she mentioned and prais

I've found twitter not to be a good forum for this kind of thing. Leaving the current pair alone, I've had a few times where more public figures can't determine easily that you're not one of the trolls, that and the fact

What could have been good feedback is ruined by tone. This is someone who has in good faith decided to show the HN community. The fact that he's 13 doesn't even really enter into it. Here is someone who has created something new a

I think the nail in the coffin for me was lack of support for Linux (this was years ago). I know that Linux is a tiny subset of their potential users, but I needed my notes to be everywhere, not just on the main platforms. Ironically, I

In a similar vein. Anti-adblock measures will pretty much guarantee I never come back. I'd love to be able to filter them from my search results. Plenty of domains I would blacklist.
