App Service on Linux is an unrelated service that actually runs on top of Service Fabric (a stateful microservice and container orchestration platform).

You are correct. The provisioning sucked. I will be fully transparent about that. In fact, I had the same problems myself. You can see the list of issues here [1]. That provisioning madness is actually unrelated to AKS, but it's being

I realize that Azure isn't as popular in the US startup crowd (and certainly not on HN), but you really cannot mention EKS without also mentioning AKS which is much more mature IMHO. And ACI (Azure Container Instances) is a serverless

Related to this, so pardon my pitch: We [Azure] literally just launched Azure Container Registry Build. [1] With one command you can build your container in the cloud and have it stored in your registry. Either push the source code from loc

You cannot stay at 18F for the long term. These are limited term, 'non-competitive service' positions. * Job security only for your 2 year term (unless you renew by another 2 for a max of 4 years). After that, you need to leave go

I was a GS-15 (Step 5) at 18F based in SF, so near the pay cap when you factor in the location adjustment (the government considers the Bay Area the most expensive region in the nation). Pay was about similar to Twitter (not counting sizabl

Thanks! I was looking at [1] and wasn't sure if those were binaries. That's perfect then. Install GCC, compilers, build headers etc via `sudo apt-get install build-essential` when necessary. So this should be the same general appr

This could be smaller by removing compilers and build headers. If I'm not mistaken I see GCC is currently part of this. I would prefer to manually install build-essentials when needed (I can then get rid of them after compiling via mul

That's very interesting. I would love for someone to dig deeper into this. What happens if you do a multistage build (to get rid of the build tools once you don't need them) and compile Postgres from source on Alpine and Bionic?

So why not build your own version with a SSH daemon if you really need it? I don't think most people need the SSH daemon in their container image. Your Dockerfile could be something like this: FROM ubuntu:bionic RUN sudo apt-get

Very nice! You could also do this simply by running on Azure Functions (free consumption plan). All you need to deploy is a simple proxies.json, see [1]. On the AWS side it appears you can entirely use API Gateway. Here [2] is a Swagger 2.0
