Slightly off topic, but I'm horrified by the idea of ever creating consciousness in machines. Imagine we built a piece of software that could feel, and built controls for its emotions. I can't imagine it would take long before so

I know this is off topic, but I really disagree about the quality of broadcast TV. Hannibal and The Good Place are both beautifully shot, very distinctive, and highly ambitious, and both came out of NBC. Speechless is on ABC, and while it&#

I would actually recommend against it. I saw it in 2D IMAX, and there was enough shaky-cam that the giant screen just felt disorienting and a bit nauseating. I don't think Rogue One is well-suited to that kind of environment.

It's a progressive charge. If you have more money to spend, a lot of the time you'll end up spending more on desserts, drinks, etc. Then you pay a greater amount of money for the service. If you have less to spend, you'll buy

First of all, while BBT may sweeten the track, it is still filmed in front of an audience; people really do laugh at the jokes. It doesn't work at all in part because the actors pause to let the laughter subside, and if you watch witho

This is off topic, but I recently watched Hornblower, a late 90s British series based on Forester's novels. It was surprisingly good, and it has basically the exact same setting as the Aubrey/Maturin novels. I'd definitely re

To enforce a minimum wage, you have to guarantee that people actually get paid at all . So in general, unless you're running a non-profit, you will have a really hard time legally with unpaid volunteers. If you don't mandate wage

Related question: where can I buy real truffles? I've had them in the past, but I have no idea where I can buy them from, online or in person, that I can trust the quality of. Anyone have any leads?

And if the artist had bought that storage, and then the storage company said "oh, we burned all your art for a terms of use violation," the artist would be rightly outraged. Sure, he's not paying, but Google doesn't ask

"Happily" may be an overstatement. I'm a Prime member, but some of the more recent changes have felt like they're designed to cheat me out of what I payed for. From "add-on items" (designed to avoid having to p

This is what Spanish and Italian do normally. "Mi chiamo" and "me llamo" both translate to "I call myself." Other languages probably do the same, but I'm not qualified to speak about anything else.

This seems like a very good use case for BTC, or some other cryptocurrency. One of the reasons micropayments are so hard to do is you need a payment processor to transfer the money, and authorizing the payment and coordinating it is a big p

They actually address this in the comic / show: Light wants people to know he exists. He wants to be seen as a god with the power to smite evildoers, which requires being known to exist. Simply killing criminals covertly wouldn't

That reminds me of Borges' story, The Library of Babel . It concerns a library which contains every possible book. Many great books would be contained within, but it would be impossible to differentiate them from books that devolve in

There's also the issue of quality; most free streaming sites have much more heavily compressed video than a good torrent. And you don't have to deal with ads on a torrent.

What can the government do with seized BTC? They don't serve any purpose as evidence, obviously (since all the transaction info is public record). Can they be auctioned off? Sold?

The situations aren't exactly analogous. All reddit had to go on was a photograph, whereas xoJane's userbase were told the story by someone directly wronged by this guy. (At least as they perceived it.)
