Well, as you quoted, the author explicitly says that "that inconvenience pales in importance to the actual liberty PRISM strips away from us." Not to mention that it is kind of tragic to lose the ability to use these awesome th

Slightly worried. When GrubHub acquired campusfood.com, which had the best coverage in my area, they ended up losing almost all of the restaurants in my city. I called them up a couple times and GrubHub claimed that they would be coming s

It has some real advantages, though. The ability to change the content and to let other people upload things to one folder is really cool and not easily done through torrents.

It would be great if there were a way to create Sync links; if I could click on "sync:XXXXXXXXXXXX" and have it automatically start syncing to that secret, then Sync would be incredibly easy to use for stuff like this.

Except it wasn't an amateur contest, or even a contest; they just chose the best professional musicians they could to back them up.

It doesn't help you. But that doesn't mean it's not useful. I subscribe to about fifteen developer blogs that update only two or three times a year. Huge waste of time to visit their websites, but whenever anything important happens, I'll

Perhaps, but this letter was focused and, on the whole, loaded with serious and important questions. It looks like his political posturing on this one is going to be aligned with our politics.

Always? No. But when news agencies get more money, they have more careful copy-editing and better investigative journalism. When hardware companies get more money, they can afford better R&D, resulting in nicer products down the road

My university provides access to top-of-the-line audio and video editing software and computers for students to use. It also has a fantastic internet connection, a large research library, and numerous other small amenities that help studen

Good for students in the short term; long term, it's strongly in students' interests for universities to get more money. This is great progress, but it needs to be coupled with better funding for public universities.

"We actually do allow you to upload in wav, aiff, flac but you can only download in those formats if the tracks were uploaded in the same." That's perfect, great to know. Again, really cool service. Thanks!

It's a really cool idea and I'd love to use it myself. I would prefer lossless tracks (all the examples I see are lossy MP3 or OGG), but that's a pretty small issue. Time-stamped comments, like in SoundCloud, would be pretty cool. And I

I did this a while back as a test; it traveled two hours away without postage, despite both recipient names being the same.

I've had the opposite experience; while with a fairly small library Songbird is fine, with mine (~700GB, lossless) it's incredibly slow and prone to crashing. Last time I tried it was about six months ago with no improvement.

Depends on how you do things. I make sure to always grab album art for my music, and I remember the art. Despite having thousands of albums, I can identify most by the artwork. I also tend to listen to one album at a time. For my needs,

For the most part, things aren't as bad as they seem. It's a huge country and any oddities gain a great deal of traction. Most votes go simply and smoothly. That being said, I'm taking a two hour drive later today to vote because my vote-

Really cool concept. I'd love to get a couple of these as gifts. Only problem is that I suck at selecting the right features, so facial recognition or Mechanical Turk usage would really help. (Also, a ponytail hairstyle would be nice.)

Which is great, except when I did it, it just... didn't work. Would download the recovery OS, then just shut off. I had to make a two hour drive to get to an Apple store where I could actually get a reinstall after my HDD broke.

But this isn't just ads. In fact, I doubt it's even primarily ads. I like this functionality a lot, as long as I can turn it off. I like being able to quickly press a key then search Amazon. It's a great new feature for me and I'm happy

Not to mention active, ongoing development, including regularly adding new features and a several hundred thousand strong community. It's not a Facebook-killer, but it's a reasonable social network as-is.

Each album is going to be mastered separately, and thus include slightly different tweaks (to volume, compression, whatever). You'll almost never see the exact same audio file stored twice.

Which will be great, but this isn't the only project using MS-PL. And if the GPL didn't include its "strong copyleft" text, there wouldn't be an issue. It's coercion which tries to make everything freer, but in this case made things less f

GPL is restrictive. It may be unacceptable to put GPLd apps on the App Store because of Apple's regulations, for instance. It makes it impossible to integrate Pixar's new open-sourced code with Blender, because the licenses conflict. Sure

Yeah, I've sideloaded a number of betas or prerelease applications and have never pirated an Android application. This article's making some pretty big assumptions.
