Understand your reaction, but I think engaging like that is more effective in dispelling a conspiracy theory than shooting it down.

Great advice. How is this managed where you are? Do you share the same code between CI and the local workstation?

I'm in the same boat. Love Elixir, but I always found the typespecs to be a huge pain (and slow!) vs. type systems like typescript. I'd love to see experiments to replace typespecs with a more ergonomic type system.

The diffs look beautiful. One suggestion to the author be to bundle this as a self-contained binary. This would have a huge impact on whether I want to install it. For this, I would look into Deno, which supports self contained binaries wit

Do you have any insight into how their sales engine works? I'm curious because it's a shame that projects go to companies like Accenture when are so many qualified teams out there.

I agree here. It feels like the popularity of git has lead us to believe that you either have to choose a clean history or the real history. But I imagine there exists a design for a source control system where you can preserve history and

These all feel a bit indirect on how they might have a positive impact. For a job board like this, I would prefer that the companies themselves are directly working on high impact problems that are a benefit to society and the environment

Any guides or tools for doing this? Some devs on our teams now now have M1s. I worry they won't feel the pain of slow apps if they develop with such fast computers. Meanwhile we've got a number of customers who use computers that

I wish downvoting harder. I'd prefer a system where down voting requires selecting or writing a reason on why you are downvoting.

This may be short-term growth at the expense of long-term sustainability. The younger generation will reach for the more affordable options like Figma, Sketch, Canva. Everyone will know how to use these tools a lot better so this these will

Reading comments like this gives me hope. There seems to be a polarized view of "jewels are worthless, just ship" or "we need more jewels". Both perspectives are dangerous. Software-jewels have a place, but you have to b

What makes you feel MacOS is 10x better. I am a Mac convert myself but felt like it was more of an incremental improvement for me. Maybe 1.5x?

This 100% Better to think of these titles as "When you might need Docker" and "When you might not need Docker" so you can consider the tradeoffs rather than interpret it as a blanket statement, Docker is good/bad.

If someone were to release an open source reference implementation with s thorough test suite, would that be able to work around the lack of a spec? And beyond that, are there any loopholes to workaround the need to pay for a spec?

It seems like there's a lot of potential for domain specific optimization if we can improve the guessing algorithms.

I think the selection some improvement improvements needed reach a native-feel. For example, interactions like triple-click to select a line. However I think the decision to make text selection opt-in makes sense from the context of an appl

We are using Flutter at our company and it's far from a black box if you get stuck. For example, try going to a TextField widget and use go-to-definition view the source source code. You can go very far down the go-to-definition hole.

And fwiw, the full quote is: We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time: premature optimization is the root of all evil. Yet we should not pass up our opportunities in that critical 3%.

We use event sourcing in a business application. Event sourcing, at it's core, is making sure your source of truth is a log of events and your app state is derived from that. Beyond those constraints, there are many variations of how i

Are bigger optimizations to be hard in the design of the higher level languages that are easier for compilers to optimize? As an extreme example, I imagine dynamic languages are hard to optimize because the compiler can make few assumptions

Agree. I also found that learning TDD rewired my brain to think top down. So in the many cases I don't do TDD, I imagine what the top level API ought to be before I dive in and start coding.

I agree that Elixir macros are far easier to understand than Ruby macros since they are defined at compile time rather than runtime. But I am against reaching for macros when the same can be accomplished using the basics: modules, functions
