What are the hard truths?

by veltas 5y ago
Because even the best decisions can fail, and unless you can be totally convincing not only to engineers but also people who are less technical (management or other stakeholders) when there's massive fallout, you're not going to w

This post is written from my own point of view, where I often get annoyed by the rules people make for programming, engineering, and business generally. But to play devil's advocate: it's often very difficult to know exactly why w

This is the sort of stuff that makes me value C not having special syntax for grouping external identifiers.

Church, and charities, can help finding social outlets outside of work (or be that themselves).

The point is more that he did actually negotiate some kind of ceasefire, whereas... Obama?

by veltas 5y ago
Kissinger helped establish a ceasefire in Vietnam (although it didn't stick). I don't know why that would be more surprising than Obama's prize. Kissinger donated the money to charity and didn't turn up to the awards cer

Didn't mean to sound negative about it, I love awk too. It is definitely small enough to learn in a day (or two), and it fills a niche people don't realise they have.
640.
by veltas 5y ago
The only really horrid thing about awk is the way you declare local variables in a function ... by just adding more parameters (and letting them be default-initialised on calls). Otherwise it can act like a relatively conventional scripting

The overriding sentiment right now is isolated shortages have turned into widespread shortages because of panic buying, not actual shortages or HGV driver shortages.

I think of an example like the ZX Spectrum which is pseudo-compiled. Stuff like addresses for goto line references and variable addresses were pre-baked (I think?), it was stored tokenised, and the maths library was stack-based like Forth.

Depends on the BASIC, and the Forth!
644.
by veltas 5y ago
The main selling point of Forth in the 80s is that it was more productive than assembly.

The defence industry already makes many tools for peace. A lot of effort goes into making tools to counteract opposing weaponry, much of which can be applied to defend civilians. But also weapons can defend civilians. The problem isn't

It's a good example, you can have recognisable trademarks be common words. The trademark is restricted to particular contexts, of course -- you cannot trademark 'apple' in general.

I didn't grow up with the ZX Spectrum, but I managed to buy one (actually a few) a number of years ago, and had a lot of fun playing around in BASIC and then writing programs in assembly. The computer's design is so very simple, i

Well C packages are usually just libraries you install with a distro's package manager. Distros (distributions, e.g. Linux distributions) are mainly an effort to integrate many programs and libraries into a usable complete OS, the pack

How do we know that global temp rise isn't just due to energy usage? I mean "does that calculation fit at all?", not "carbon dioxide is fake".

The top links all go to CIA website and have loads of PDFs that I think contain Al Qaeda propaganda and news. So don't click on that in the UK, pretty sure it's illegal to download that with our terror laws.

I told my current mechanic about my last mechanic's quote for a job and they laughed and said it was a rip-off and otherwise derided them. And my current mechanic works fast and doesn't waste my money.
