I assumed the black hole carved out a spherical hole in the center of the Earth. If it was inside it, then it would be inside a spherical shell (a very thick one at that).

My roommate and I are both algorithmic traders. He LOVES that book with deep sophisticated passion. I haven't read it yet, but he described it to me as a high level discussion of why and how people trade. It's not necessarily going to help

No, that's irrelevant: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/mechanics/sphshel...

That is completely false. Modelling the inside of the earth as a hollow spherical shell, the force inside at all points due to the gravity of the surrounding shell is 0.

That's a valid point, but more successful doesn't necessarily imply "nicer" or "more compassionate", which I believe was the goal of the donation.

I find it hard to believe that a person could get the same engineering education on their own than at a good engineering university. From a practical point of view, I see what you mean, in that, an HR department weighing two candidates woul

I don't think you understand that people who make markets (add liquidity) decrease YOUR investment costs. These market makers can only trade millions of shares per second (a vast overstatement) IF there is actual demand for that. Suppose th

To be clear, these are not the puzzles Microsoft uses in their actual hiring interviews. The submitted title is terribly misleading.

You wouldn't filter people based on how good they are at school? I'd definitely weigh that when interviewing a candidate. I agree about the puzzles though. If they're relevant to the job, then sure, it makes sense to ask them. Otherwise, dr

I disagree. If I was hiring, I'd be interested in top-notch people who are passionate but also just really damn smart, rather than having, say, specific platform or language knowledge. This is what Google did, and it's worked out pretty wel

In my experience, it's more peer-dependent. In practice, I barely interact professors, TAs, or "the department". All of my [school] learning has been through grinding through psets, projects, or intellectual discussions with friends.

I'm not saying it's not doable, I'm just saying it's more complicated (and probably much more expensive) than the alternative. It also makes individual turnstile failures more difficult to handle. Suppose the network died on one of the turn

I think maintaining consistent state over all turnstiles at all stations is too complicated. It requires a large infrastructure overhead. Putting the stored value on the card is much simpler and doesn't require nearly as much overhead b/c i

There's a minimum bar for getting into Caltech, and an even higher minimum bar for graduating from there. We're talking about lower bounds here. Saying "a degree is a piece of paper" entirely misses the point.
