I don't know if this has changed, but when I was an undergrad in math, all the summer REUs were for women and minorities. I applied to many all the same but never got to do any summer research, which definitely worked against me when a

My experience is also the opposite fwiw. To be fair, I don't think I know any democrats who actually like the party. They're more "not republican" than democrat. Maybe the democrats you've talked to are the true bel

I've found it better to consider theory a language to describe musical ideas, but not to impose rules. The "understanding" seems to be a bit more about just being able to name what a thing is, and thereby be able to manipulat

Hmm, with my 5600 XT I've never had a problem with Xorg or Wayland. I can't remember the last time my computer crashed. Just another data point, not trying to claim this wasn't happening for you.

As someone who really only does numerical computing, and mostly with Julia, I'm curious. Could Julia use some help from PL and systems people to be noticably better for people like me? Or would you guess it's already on an ideal t

How did you feel about Skyfall? I'm not a big Bond (or even action movie) fan and I didn't like Quantum of Solace, but Skyfall is one of my favorite films just on cinematography alone. I certainly don't find it to be just a r

Figured as much. It's been in airplane mode the entire time I've owned it and I just put books on it with calibre. I guess this somehow mirrors how some people feel about their Apple devices? They don't notice it being locked

I'm not who you replied to, but I find this interesting. It seems like you're asking rhetorically, but the answer for me is no. I expect I'm not alone. I do own an old Kindle Paperwhite, which I assume is fairly locked down?

Have you read Neal Stephenson's "Anathem"? I'm not exactly sure what to say about it in context of your comment for fear of spoilers, but it sounds like you would like it.

No, people have not been saying that ethereum is already partially on proof of stake for 4 years. I realize that isn't what you meant, but what you meant seems to be missing the point that it's actually happening recently.

I grew up in WV. I have many friends from near the DuPont plant. We like to joke about how we grew up drinking dupont water...kind of morbid though since it's pretty true.

I think this used to be true, but these days tube amps can be very faithfully modeled. E.g., the fender tone master amps sound great.

I'm pretty confused about your comment and all the replies. Do you all not have lights? I can see my keyboard just fine without backlighting. Not wanting backlighting has nothing to do with whether I need to look at my keyboard or not.

Not the parent commenter, but kinda, yeah. Saying that it's stupid to learn x if you aren't going to monetize comes off poorly to me. So does saying that everyone should learn x. I don't understand either view. Is it weird to

But you don't get sick explicitly because your body is eliminating virus. Sure there is some, but I'd think the amount of virus spread is reduced a massive amount by vaccination. Further, if you were to get sick from someone that

(I'm a mathematician) Honestly, not that many people in math think about the construction of the natural numbers frequently. Yeah, we learn about it of course, but that's about it. Very often the natural numbers do not include 0.

One problem with this is that, as mentioned, some julia packages actually are state of the art. There isn't a C equivalent for everything DifferentialEquations.jl can do. Ditto for Zygote.jl and Enzyme.jl.
