I like to log everything I do in a log file. I use OneNote for this as it is very easy to create checkbox lists. I start the day by creating a new day title with the date and then add empty checkbox items for the things I want to get done,

The first part of Neal Stephensons latest novel “Fall, or Dodge in hell” explores exactly this topic in the context of social media. The possible consequences of a post-truth world where people cannot agree on facts are stunning. An interes

Are you self-employed? That can be a way to bump your income significantly in the belgian IT world. My email is in my profile if you want to talk about it. (self-employed for 5 years, 1 kid, early thirties, also in Belgium)

The Minimalists movement talks about this a lot. The idea is that you pack everything you own into labeled boxes and for 3 months, every time you need X you first think about if you really need X or not, and if you do you unpack. After 3 mo

In a sense that already happened with the web stack. In tech like Electron developers write most of their app once and use a “shell” like Electron to interact with the host OS. Unfortunately the web stack is very bloated with years of legac

I disagree. We've been doing this for decades on mailinglists # example heading You can add emphasis with asterisk or _underscores_. Links can be done with [1] tags And as an alternative, nothing stops you from using Markdown syntax

Adding links and plaintext emails are not mutually exclusive. Hackernews comments are a great example where commenters often embed a [1] tag in their comment and at the end of the comment have a section like [1] https://news.ycom

The fiasco was not on Parse's end but it was ours for locking ourselves into their platform. The sunset window was indeed fair and as you described they provided a clear migration path to self-hosted mongo and eventually the open sourc

I have to spend some more time on it but due to lack of getting started documentation or examples it was hard to get a Hello World project running. On the GTK-rs side the documentation [1] is much better and I was up and running with a samp

Interesting project, I’ll be checking this out soon. I’ve been experimenting with several gui libraries in Rust lately and so far the GTK3 bindings seem to be the most promising for building native GUIs in Rust. With native I mean GTK/

Nice project, congrats on shipping. I’ve taken a quick glance and looked at the code. It’s a Java/Spring Boot project which usually gets a lot of flak around here for “too much magic”. This project is written in a very clean style and

This depends on the scenario. Before the async revolution most app servers were using this model and I’m sure that a very significant portion of the current internet is served with this model. It may not be the fastest in all cases but I st

Plainly deleting the image will cause existing setups to break. Something like `cargo yank` would be more appropriate where you can still download the version for existing projects but you cannot use it in new projects anymore. Unfortunatel

I've been thinking a lot about this lately and I'm trying to compile some information on how others think it should work. Can you elaborate on what you mean by an all-native solution on top of a powerful modern language? The way I

As far as I know most traditional package managers only remove files and folders declared in the package. Not files installed somewhere else during the install script or created by the binary when it runs.

In a good knob it’s not an arc but just clicking and dragging straight up or down that makes it move. A lot of VST audio plugins work like this and they get a lot of controls into a small area like this.

In Bash/Zsh you can do it with `git config --global alias.cof $'!git for-each-ref --format=\''%\(refname:short\)\'' refs/heads | fzf | xargs git checkout'` and then do a checkout with `git cof`

This looks good. I believe there is a lot of room for TUI tools like this. Modern terminals and TUI libraries are advanced enough to support splits, colors, clicks etc. Why run a 600mb electron app when a small TUI app will do just fine. Ev
