At least in Germany you need a masters to start a PhD and I think this is true for most of Europe. Actually, I always thought America is one of the few countries where you can start a PhD right out of undergrad.

While a really cool approach I would highly discourage a beginner to get started with this. Bayesian methods are not what most people use and the book does not teach any of the necessary basics in terms of analysis of real world data

As a non drinker you probably don't like the taste of any or most alcoholic beverages. Whether it is conditioning or not, I do enjoy the taste of a good beer. There is not more 'benefit' to it than eating good food.

Backprop is such a fundamental part of Neural Networks, I am very surprised how anyone can complain about having to know how it works. It is true that once you grocked the principle implementing it for more than 2 layers is pretty tedious.

I have yet to meet a professor that is not at least able to read English fluently. Their pronunciation might be terrible but they can at least understand.

A minor detail, but I am surprised about the whole "it was hard to figure out when someone moved a file" thing. I always assumed the actual file on disk was abstracted away into a database record, that specified the folder etc. We

I feel like "Digital Natives" is a term non-technical, business people (most in entry level positions) use to make themselves feel better about the fact that their jobs don't require any kind of special skill or knowledge.
