> “...it decided to deselect these dissertations, so that 3.2 km could be freed up for new acquisitions” Am I reading this correctly and they have 3.2 kilometers of dissertations? What an interesting unit of paper archive size, though

I find sq handy when you use it to accomplish things you can't (easily) do with just raw SQL. Things like: exporting certain rows to JSON or CSV, transforming rows into nicely formatted log lines for viewing, or reading in a CSV file

I love sq. It's handy for quickly performing simple operations on DBs and outputting that as CSV or JSON. Though my one wish is that the sq query language (SLQ) supported substring matching like SQL's `... LIKE "SOME_STRING%&

Shifting public sentiment seems a worthy goal, but this particular comment ("OpenAI?? more like ClosedAI amirite") gets repeated so often I don't think its doing anything. It shows up on every mention of OpenAI but has no bea

This is a tired and trite comment that appears on every mention of OpenAI but contributes little to the discussion.

I too am confused by this. When using the chatgpt.com interface it seems to expose its chain-of-thought quite obviously? Or the "chain-of-thought" available from chatgpt.com isn't the real chain-of-thought? Here's an ex

Your mixing up general Tor use vs Tor hidden services. With hidden services there’s not really an exit node because the traffic never exits the Tor network. Charlie could only see the machine in the final step of requesting the illegal con

The core question here is w whether law enforcement actually believes, incorrectly, that the exit node operators are being intentionally unhelpful, or if they understand that due to Tor’s design the exit node operators have no valuable info

Some revisions yes, but this is a big one. This discrepancy is because the initial numbers are determined based on surveys and the later revised numbers use more reliable but more slowly updated IRS reporting. (I believe)

In addition to what others have said, hardware decoding comes with other drawbacks. There’s occasionally decoding inaccuracies and there’s no support for most video filters (unless you’re using `auto-copy`)

Slightly related: mpv also has excellent backward playing capability! Of course video encodings aren’t optimized for this so it does some work to make the performance reasonable.

I absolutely love mpv. And if you have a Mac check out IINA. It’s just a relatively thin GUI over the mpv core.

Besides what others have said, I think non-tech savvy users get a huge benefit from passkeys. Imagine the people that aren’t already using password managers (probably most people). With passkeys there’s no way they can reuse or leak a pass

Eh this feels like a false comparison. Memory pressure is an internal macOS system metric not some public facing self aggrandizing metric. It’s not like Apple has marketing material like “idles at 20% memory pressure!”. I’m sure it’s explic
