90%+? It might make more sense to support the 90%+ case than the rest. I wonder if at some point this is going to hurt Oracle through lack of Oracle Java support for Open Source libraries and even ISV software. Certainly it feels a bit risk

680[01]0 had only 23 address lines (A1-A23), 16-bit word size, thus 16 MB addressable memory. There’s also LDS (lower data select) and UDS pins for 8-bit I/O chips.

I haven't seen any Windows/Linux laptops with a good trackpad. Apple seems to be unbeatable in this regard.

Zero ROI? Isn’t SpaceX the largest launch provider in the world and for the U.S. government? Many times than the rest of the U.S. space industry combined.

If freight trains are so good, why do we use trucks? Freight trains carry a lot, but are really bad at branching. Same with GPUs.

32-bit ARM-based systems supported up to 1 TB of RAM. 32-bit x86 only up to 64 GB. Unless you want to map more than 4 GB in a single process, you could very well stay 32-bit. But AArch64 (or ARM64) and AMD64 did bring a lot more on the tabl

Scratch all that. The main issue in 2004 preventing hardcore mode would have been server stability, or the lack of it.

Say USA had 375k metric tons of gold and wants to use it for paying the debt. This would just crash the gold price and the debt would be nowhere near serviced.

8086, 80286, 680[01]0 all had a 16-bit word size and could only access RAM at 16-bit granularity (I/O is a different story). Of course they had the ability to extract just a byte as well. 68000 generates a bus error if you try unaligne
