Considering that, despite knowing for decades that pulse oximetry gives inaccurate results for people with darker skin, Covid showed us that we still can't/don't properly account for skin pigmentation during treatment[1]... I

The article states 60/30% of young people, so the correct interpretation is that older men are "taking" a large share of the young, single women / young women prefer dating older men.

Depends on the firm, but there is usually a "lock-up" period of several years where you cannot divest. Sometimes the firms will return the money early if things are getting bad but once the money is deployed they can't risk a

Of course, but its an absolute pain when you switch jobs/insurers or move and have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get prescribed the drugs you need to get through those bunches of hoops.

Just a helpful acrostic I remember from organic chemistry: ROMP. R is your reference chain, then ortho, meta, para as you go around the ring.

I've been trying out this organizational method for about 2 months now. tl;dr - everything falls into a Project.Area.Resource.Archive (sub)folder and the ideal is to rotate things through as soon as they're finished to Archives wh

Siderophores are some of the craziest things in biology, in my opinion. Short peptides (often <10 amino acids) with affinities to metal irons that are just incomprehensibly low with binding so tight you can actually deplete metals from w

On this topic, I would highly recommend Nick Lane's Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World. Interesting learning about how life worked different when oxygen was much lower, and much higher than today.

I love ideas around extracting minerals from seawater since there is just so much. e.g. estimated 4.5B tons of uranium in seawater, ~1000x higher than land sources. Pretty much everything is dissolved in there, but the energy requirements a

Thats true, but we do tremendous amounts of human DNA sequencing for certain causes at scale(e.g. understanding/treating cancer) whereas environmental sequencing is usually done to monitor/search for things at a much lower sample

Very good news to hear. With recent energy problems being exposed via the war in Ukraine, nuclear power is increasingly our best option for cheap, abundant energy. Despite decades of misdirected "Green" propaganda, nuclear is the

Can confirm that the data is often, though not always, stored in a shared directory and that yes, many tools can/do read gzip files directly which probably hinders the adoption of better compression algorithms.

Well I think the issue with wastewater and other screening tech is that there is no global average reference genome. In that case they're sequencing everything from phages, viruses (human and plant), bacteria, fungi, plants/animal

That would be true for FASTA compression but FASTQ files contain other data. With a MiSeq, for example, 1/3 of the data is the DNA sequences, 1/3 is a quality score (0-37) and 1/3 is a header which includes things like flow c

I always liked the second proof they show. You see it and you think something must be wrong with the method... but then try it with other numbers. 10x = 8.888 - x = 0.888 ------- 9x = 8; x = 8/9 = 0.888...
