A few thoughts on ad supported SW: -It's interesting how TV is moving towards a pay-per episode model (HBO orignals, ITMS and netflix) and SW is going towards advertising. I haven't owned a TV in 10 years b/c ads became so intolerable. Bu

I haven't been in SF long but I find it fascinating how much people care about the valley popularity contest. Nobody, including Ted needs to be friends with the whole bay area to make a great company. Startups are about great products and

It seems like everyone here has an idea and wants other people to follow them. If any of the YCnews lost souls are to come together many will have to abandon theirs.

Agreed, they have ugly Ui's but that's not Qt's fault. When you want an "Ok" button, a dialog or a check box in Qt, it's calling the EXACT SAME function that get's called when you do it without Qt. So by definition it is native. You shou

http://trolltech.com/ I can't comment on Cocoa. But if you know C++ Qt is a dream. They have amazing libraries that make up for the shortcomings of C++. It also makes native look and feel cross-platform development a snap. Google Eart

1) I personally think installing plugins can be more confusing than installing apps. Inexperienced users see, "please install our plugin," and the lump sum of everything they don't know about computers falls on their head like a cartoon p

Yeah, but what about syncing? I am ALWAYS adding a contact to my phone then another to my email, then I'm syncing them. I can't just wipe everything out on one end w/a csv upload. Really this is something I believe should happen invisibl

I seem to be one of the sole dinosaurs of this group. I am building desktop SW. It is a 3d visualization tool heavy on OpenGL. It can't be done on the web the way we want it w/o a java applet (which I think is a terrible alternative.)

It's funny that nobody mentioned pac hts. If you're looking for a multi-room place, it's REALLY expensive. But for some reason there are plenty of cheap studios. I know lots of young people here who don't pay more than folks in the missi

I see, but how do you solve the upload problem? Does your data stay local? Does it sync when you connect? Syncing doesn't dodge the upload problem and if it's local you loose many of the benefits of a web app.

Our parents got through the Cold War with "drop, tuck and roll," just fine. Plenty of British kids got through WWII with air-raids every other day. The more we treat children like fragile little eggs, the less able they will be to carry t
