I don't think anyone's arguing against cars. I just think that American cars are less desirable than Japanese, Swedish or German cars. Cars are no doubt useful things.

It's really not terrible. America invented the TV and Zenith, the last American TV company, was sold to LG over a decade ago. Not many cried when IBM sold it's laptop division to Lenovo either. Americans just aren't great at manufacturin

Qt is my favorite gui API of all time. Their new IDE is amazing as well: http://trolltech.com/developer/qt-creator It feels like google made an IDE. It's got Chrome like simplicity and power. Certainly worth a look if you're Qt hacker.

It will be interesting to see what happens during a slowdown in China. Most people don't realize how close they came to overthrowing their gov during Tiananmen Square. Revolutions rarely occur when times are good. Is Tiananmen dead or ju

Slashdot has gone way downhill in recent years but it's still far and away the funniest group of nerds on the web. I used to have my settings only view +5 funny comments. Guaranteed out loud laughter every day.

We used Strang for Linear Algebra. It was the only math class in college I did badly in. I tried multiple times to understand linear algebra and every time I ended up at the picture in the first few pages of the book. Each page built up

You give me too much credit. I pay for secure offsite svn. They were providing us w/ bugzilla :) I clearly didn't do much homework on this. But I stand by our solution even if it was made in ignorance. It is the only bug tracking tool m

Right on, it looks really nice, but w/ dropbugz you never leave the command line. You never log in to a site or search a DB or tag things etc etc. It's just ls'ing grep'ing and vi'ing. I find it less tedious and thus I'm more prone to lo

And furthermore, you can set bug=your/dropbugz/folder in a .bashrc file ON dropbox. Have all your ~/.bashrc's on different machines source the one from dropbox and you're set. Now entering a bug is just: echo "App crashes on launch" >

I think I read an article here about simulating jet-lag for lab rats by altering the light in their cages. Apparently the old ones died at a much higher rate when they "lost time." Just like the spring transition. Being a lifelong city gu

Your argument rests on the notion that politicians are not representative of their cultures. Clausewitz defined war as politics by another means, but he never said politics is independent of culture. Whether intentionally or not, a countr

You shouldn't need to motivate your co-founder. Co-founders are supposed to know what to do and want to do it without any intervention. Motivating other people takes a little bit of time and a LOT of energy. Uncertainty in even one perso

It really doesn't matter whether these stories are true or not. The fact that they could conceivably be true is indicative of a major problem. After years of building software around Microsoft's tedious business plans, we developers are e
