Finally a simple product idea that I am jealous I didn't think about it first. Any HN reader could have thought about this, and many could even implement it in a weekend, yet it was these guys. I salute the open mind, and the entrepreneuria

We are officially in the future, but we still have a long way to go as humans. Can we just pretend that we didn't see the male chauvinistic side of the ad, because we'd love to have the technology that is showcased? It really irks me to the

I should have started with "Most programmers make horrible designers"; my apologies for that. The point is, even making a not-so-bad design, takes a lot of thought; more importantly, it takes courage to push a design concern that will make

I have given room for that. When the product is a tool, then you can't do much, but accept. The experience is usually similar to the one you have if you ask a blacksmith to make you a pair of scissors.

This is true for another reason. Programmers make horrible designers, and they should stick to programming when the product is user facing. They can forge perfect tools, and sometimes just the tool is valuable enough to make a profitable pr

Are you referring to the population of India? Doesn't that just mean there will be more TEDx events in India? The reason for the 100 attendee limit is obviously to start a conversation between the attendees and to save it from becoming a la

Consider this as a demonstration of cardboard as a material, not that of a bike. Now, if we are to prefer cardboard bikes for their environmental friendliness, we would probably want to look at what else is used to make the material strong.

Why is the feeling of owing your success to others a syndrome? It is the truth. Hard work and brains can get you only so much. You owe a huge chunk of your success (or what you are) to others. Anybody who doesn't accept this as a fact, and

Call me crazy, but it seems like the internet will correct the patent system by calling duds like this one. As specific patents get publicly criticized (be it design or utility), it not only helps correct examiner errors, but also puts pres

Dunno, perhaps the brand makes a difference. Ours is Brondell. You need just a couple of pieces of toilet paper after the warm air dryer if any. Also, the warm seat, warm water, warm air changes the whole thing, especially in winter. For so

There is something wrong with your jet/mud/arm analogy, because it doesn't translate the real life results. The size, location, mobility, etc. make a difference. Also, these toilets come with a warm air dryer as well. I also saw them for th

This is probably how things work in most big old software corporations. It is not open to big surprises, like a revolutionary new product, or a catastrophic failure. If the company is on a profitable turf, I would say, it is the way to go.

An inflated football in the middle of a game of 10 kids stopped because of a punctured ball is priceless. Bought 1, and will take 1 with me to my hometown next summer. This is not a cure for inequality, it will only make a temporary differe

It is not a logical paradox, it is very counterintuitive. With just about 23 samples, you'll have a birthday collision with 50% chance. Many people would think to get 50%, you'd need 183 samples. It is also counterintuitive, because it is u

Programmers can't even make proper choices when designing software for people, how would they do while designing government? I would say, being a programmer might even make you a worse president: 1) There are no advantages to being a progra

Yes, but that would break the meaning of the multiplier. That's why there is the global in front. So, global adder is a solid adder (or perhaps a rising multiplier) who regularly works on significant open source projects, e.g. webkit, apach

Ditto on the addictiveness of continuation-passing style. However, don't try it when coding with peers who are not used to it; you can be burnt at the stake. Because, even though it makes the code easier to read, to the untrained eye it is

We don't need to read a textbook to use a spoon. But, then we need to read the manufacturer's manual to write effective assembly code. Is this a conundrum, or is it just that life is a little bit too complex to fit in naive generalizations?

I really like the multiplier vs adder differentiation. I would also acknowledge the solid global adders, as those who contribute to respectable open source projects.

The limited number of tokens argument for inflated price doesn't make sense for standalone apps. It is very much possible that people get their own developer tokens from twitter. Perhaps, you could provide a lower price tier for such cases.

An older treatment of the problem, which I personally find to be clearer: Kernighan, M., Church, K., Gale, W (1990) “A Spelling Correction Program Based on a Noisy Channel Model,” Coling, Helsinki , Finland. http://acl.ldc.upenn.edu/C/C90/
