Does anybody have any info about why this line was put in the license? Is it from the time when Google was promoting its famous motto, which is now swept under the rug.

So, this is what HN posts have come to? The level of tabloid science news coverage.

Just because something became common, and comfortable, doesn't mean it will stop being economically significant. Otherwise, after the first internet bubble burst, the web design business would crash and burn, along with the the online adver

Not all patents are by trolls or big corporates. Patents are crucial to medium size and small size firms. A healthy economy requires to create an environment for these firms to thrive. If you think big corporates are the ones to focus on, c

Before pulling the end of world pickets from the attic, just have a look at the last page of the patent. None of the claims are granted. If anything, this shows the level of crap the patent examiners have to deal with everyday.

There are no valid claims on this disclosure, see last page. The description is just a narrative: even though they can be used as evidence of prior art for future patents, they are not part of the IP given to the applicant.

If KS is serious in what they are doing, they shouldn't try patches like putting arbitrary rules, but take action to solve the problem directly. Project funding is their core business after all. Apple does it with their App Store, and witho

If the point is to make sure that the backers do not make decisions uninformed, why not take time to add a curated risk score. This way, the projects will be responsible in providing proper evidence about how far they are in production, and

Prior art in itself does not provide a defensive punch. But, if a company X decides to go about suing everybody using Linux and databases, because it competes with X's business, a large patent portfolio will act as a big stick for defense a

Re: IBM patents, IBM has an interesting, and quite unique strategy regarding IP. About 20-25% of IBM patents are software patents, and IBM uses this patent portfolio to protect open source projects, especially Linux ( http://www.linuxplanet

All non-UI aspects of the Java code can now be translated into Objective-C. I am very happy to see this finally become a reality. Hopefully, we'll soon see this integrated into Cordova (PhoneGap) as well.

Obviously, B-trees have many other uses. But, i) Fenwick algorithm is more efficient when it comes to the hard numbers (the k is small), ii) it is very easy to implement.

What is needed, is a fast track evaluation of technology claims. The speed can be achieved by streamlining the process of finding the field expert, providing archives and secretarial services during the evaluation, and coaching the expert a

It would be a wonderful day for managers of the world if Balsamiq was acquired by Microsoft and integrated into Powerpoint. My brain hurts just imagining the avalanche of meetings with playable mockups; would it be good or bad?

Adrian, I finally watched your talk. Thank you for the link. It was a good talk. (Note to self: keep a few 40 minute talks handy in case the next discussion goes into a general area of interest :-) My specific complaint will be that the tal

It does matter who does it, when it is done, and how the results are used. Doing user study with the intention to iterate on the design after the development progress is already far into completion is failure of the designer. If the design

A good UX designer doesn't linger around after doing the job. Their utility drops drastically after the initial design. If they do have to stay, then they haven't done a good job of communicating the key points and observations.

Why is karma any significant to the quality of a post? It already costs enough to create a post (in time and effort); if that doesn't have any effect on the quality, it is not clear why an additional cost in karma would make a difference. H
