I like this work. We should be seeing more exploratory posts like this one. I find it interesting that both google's and skarupke@'s hash map have exactly the same name: flat_hash_map. Maybe boost-inspired ?

The performance gap between performing cache-hot lookups vs lookups that miss can be 10X. The increase is more a reflection of that rather than doing more operations. The RAM model doesn't concern itself with memory hierarchies or slow

To be more accurate, binary trees are constructed only after a bucket ends up containing a small number of elements, which should only happen rarely unless a bad hash function is chosen.

There are a dozen variations of this question already for TGIF.

Oh no, as an individual, I cannot. But a 1,000 engineers looking at it, even if they don't understand it in full, they'll be able to tell if it's fake or not.

Thank you for the reference [1]. Maybe I missed something on the post's paper, but I don't think they make any claims wrt ARTs and hash tables. They do seem to conclude that ARTs are better than the ordered containers they compare

Nobody forced me to defend the company, that should be obvious, plus I'm sure I'm within policy here. It seems that I am "attacked" primarily by fellow googlers, which speaks to my point: If this demo was fake, it would

Would volkswagen be able to do what they did if the software of their controller was open for all of their employees to see ?

Definitely much better than the scripted Eliza, but I agree with you. Let's have Duplex negotiate my comcast plan, then we'll talk about true AI!

I disagree with you. The company has identity. Would I had misrepresented you if I had said that we are the best search engine in the world ? I tried to give a balanced viewpoint so that I don't project more than what has been accompli

This paper is very well laid out and a joy to read. The conclusion seems to be that Adaptive Radix Trees [1] outperform all b-tree variants, skiplists and Masstree [2] for all ops except range scans. The claim is more credible if one consid

I'm curious to see how this plays out. This assistant has a limited set of voices. Imagine an employee receiving reservation requests at a restaurant, being called up dozens of times on the same day, with the same voice, for dozens of
