Just check the channel log. There's no reason to make this so complicated. We're not even talking about "normal users" these are people involved in the Gnome project. I'm sure they can figure out how to click a link

It's financed by the same company that does telephone surveillance in the US and last time I checked self hosting was a major pain compared to running, say, a minimal python IRC server.

I heard somewhere that all modern wars must now start by the leaders of the belligerent countries comparing each other to Hitler. The title here sounds about as well reasoned.

I'm not convinced the US has a higher standard of living, especially for the PMC. Here all your money gets sucked up by housing which isn't a problem in Russia.

Sounds like Honeywell: >We're pivoting to software proceeds to furlough the engineers every winter >Why does everyone with skills keep leaving?

Half goes to taxes and half of what's left over goes to rent. After that you have to save up for a pretty large downpayment.

Also extremely high immigration. We're in the high part of our immigration cycle which means depressed wages and expensive housing.

Yeah, I was homeschooled. It sounds to me like public schools actively discourage this kind of thing.

This. We were taught in school to recognize and analyze propaganda, advertising, and PR. I'm not immune but sometimes it almost seems like it when I talk to other people.

Wow that's weird and feels very "banky." How involved are banks in the LinuxFoundation? Why does Canonical even have a "financial services sector?" It's a Linux distro not an investment bank (or so I thought.)

Most public forums have a very narrow window of allowed ideas. Personal websites are the best way to explore new things and not get pigeonholed. It's weird to hear someone on HN argue against them. Of all the forums I use this is proba

I'm not sure it's possible to protect people from bad financial advice without creating class stratification between those who can actually invest in useful things and those that can't.

The framerate was surprisingly good. Plenty for text editing and IRC.

I had a debian chroot on mine. The official firmware is just running awesome WM on X11 so you can run normal arm Linux software pretty easily.

I've never felt more enraged by government workers than listening to them. What a truly anti-American idea.

I'm not convinced the friend zone is real, I think some women are just fine being friends with people they don't want to have sex with. I've gotten out of the "friend zone" with multiple women I know.

We've had free CPU designs before: 8051 and MIPS. I think RISC-V popularity will just lead to less compatibility.

You should tell that to corp IT where I work. My macbook fans have been running non-stop all week with the machine doing God only knows what while all I have open is webex, outlook, and a few VTE windows.

I don't mind the rate limiting personally. I think it's good for my mental health. I do wish I knew how many posts I had left though so I didn't waste the last one. There have been too many high quality comments on subjects I

That's not new. There are mountains of awful software still being used. I just got done spending hours setting up a Windows VM for a student they needed because of an arbitrary requirement at their school.

Normal people get really confused by the word "free" to the degree that I think it might actually be worse than "open." Libre is really perfect but no one wants to call it that because it sounds silly.

I'm pretty sure "Open source" is a legally protected phrase owned by OSI with a precise definition.
