If the median is higher than the mean that probably means the distribution is heavier on the positive side. Cheap apartments are illegal and the legal ones don't get financed/constructed. There's a cutoff much higher than zer

The metro in DC is pretty underrated and you can live car free pretty far out into its suburbs even.

They find divisions between us that won't be reconciled, then tell us they'll deal with the people we don't like. Democracy has pathologies that people don't appreciate, especially at a national level.

They're a pretty terrible registrar/host but their marketing is fantastically good. Every non-tech business owner I've met uses them. It makes me kind of sad.

I don't think enlightenment should be in quotes here. I'm pretty sure this really is the logical conclusion of the ideas in the enlightenment and if we want to move beyond the trouble we have we're going to have to question t

As someone who used to be a lot more promiscuous: I'm pretty sure hooking up is the opposite of emotional maturity. I love Seinfeld (the old TV show) because it actually does show this. The main characters (at least Seinfeld and Elaine

The older I get the more superstition makes sense. I used to think older people were superstitious because they were more likely to have existential crises (since they were closer to death) but now that I'm middle aged I've realiz

>Modern desktops are still better than either option If I hadn't found CWM I'd probably still be on FVWM2 (with the mwm theme.) IDK if that counts as a "modern desktop" but I'm certainly a fan.

I've seen some re-interpretations of phaux-3d rectilinear skeuomorphism that used a lot of light scattering effects and looked extremely modern. I thought around this year those would be common but everyone seems to be still hung up on

WebAssembly is actually very high level. You need tail call support if you want to preserve the original structure of the program (which seems to be the intention.) I think you can get around it with eg CPS but then you'd get something

I haven't thought about it but most of the movies I've really enjoyed were recommended to me by my dad, girlfriend, or my brother in law. I can't think of anything I really enjoyed from a recommendation algorithm. The last mo

I'm not convinced having both parents in most families working is actually a good thing. It seems to depress birth rates in most countries to the degree that you eventually get a pretty serious crisis.

I own voting shares in a company and it's hard enough just getting information out of them that they should want to share. The idea that the average investor has any idea what's going on in the companies they invest in is absurd.

I agree it isn't a substitute but for software dev you really don't need it. Plenty of stuff gets built with just email and IRC. My team never turns on their camera because it's just an extra hassle and we get plenty done.

It's all distorted by credit which heavily discourages building new housing. If I don't get a house this year I'm giving up on using real estate and moving onto my boat. I wish more people would do things like this.
