>Wayland enables the flicker-free, nicely-animated experience Of all the things I care about this might be at the very bottom of the list. If that's the best reason people can come up with to give up my DE and decent performance for

I've been banned by Dang before, but of all the moderators on the internet I still like him the most. He tries hard and after all these years still works in good faith as far as I can tell. HN wouldn't be what it is without him.

GP probably meant consumer vs business laptops. Personally I let my last laptop die and never bothered replacing it. My Pinephone works much better when I need portable computing and it means I don't have to carry two laptops on a work

HN is written in a custom lisp dialect. I'd argue it's more like one of those designer cars than a corolla.

My mail server's IP has been the same for 4 years now. Even the machine I'm typing this on only changes IPs every couple years or so and that's a residential IP that isn't supposed to be static. Of course you want ever

Walking around with a notebook (the paper kind, I like the small pocket sized ones with no rules so you can write music and draw things too) instead of a phone and then coming home and typing what you wrote into a computer is awesome. I wro

If kids are trying to kill themselves it's not the guns that are the problem. I'd argue telling them constantly that they're horrible or incapable for being their race is probably closer to the real problem since that seems t

I think what we need is trust, good faith communication, and actual science (rather than conjecture and bribes.) That's all gone now, possibly for a very long time.

The places in the US with the tightest gun regulations have the most gun deaths because it's the people, not the guns, that cause the problem.

School shootings are an extremely tiny minority among shootings in the US. They just get a lot of attention.

The economic problem Japan faces is temporary while the demographic change from immigration would be permanent. It makes sense that the Japanese are avoiding it.

Actually yes. There are parts of the US that behave like the developed world with gun crime rates comparable to commonwealth countries and Western Europe. The parts with high gun crime rates are full of people who for whatever reason can&#x

My understanding is that the older stuff is actually cheap, it's just much harder to manage and that's what people don't like.

It sounds to me like the modern process is just working up GMO yeast matabolites. I feel like the main issue is probably going to be patents and not something technical.

Yeah. Having lived for years with geosyncronous internet: it's not what people think of normally as internet, it's more of a consumerized interesting radio thing. It's not reliable, it's not fast, the latency is insane,

I've seen videos of people using starlink on boats. Without compensation for the boat movement it performs poorly/unpredictably. I really wonder if they'll just tolerate the people that do it anyway since they're unlikel

If you're set up for electric propulsion that's not too bad. That plus my work machine would be under half what a properly sized motor should draw at 50% throttle. It only needs to work for ~6-7 hours a day.

Interesting. If I moved on to my boat and managed to get by with the 5GB option I'd be just about breaking even because of how high rent is.

Me and my girlfriend use period timing. We accept the risk because we would eventually like children, now wouldn't be ideal but wouldn't be catastrophic either. Both of us agree that regardless of the law we wouldn't get an a

If I were to buy a new laptop I'd probably avoid high DPI displays. I can display fonts small enough that I can't read them even though the screen can resolve them on the older 1080p screen my thinkpad has. All the high DPI means

On the other hand, North Korea is the way it is because they've rejected our neo-liberal ideology. I think much like TOR did for Iraq this would actually move them away from China and closer to us. EDIT (out of comment quota): I'd

It's really odd, everyone said search was the main reason to put videos on YouTube instead of self hosting/with a CDN. I guess all they have now is inertia, kind of like the cable companies had.

It's weird buying expensive stuff like boats after living your whole life surrounded by new consumer goods. I keep finding modifications/damage the previous owners made and have to figure out how to deal with them on my own.
