Rust has and “advantage” here that it’s not generally shipped with your distro’s package manager. I think my biggest problem with this article is that the distros put Python there in the first place, and all of them apply patches to make Py

I think I use struct much more when interfacing with C, but I can see array being useful for arrays specifically when you expect more than a couple of elements. Both are still quite niche though.

They are recommended when you want speed, but most people writing Python probably never need that much speed (or would probably want numpy anyway), and the few who do likely have more private sources to recommend it for specific occasions.

The latter two are correct (and likely most of your etc.), but pip is not official. pip maintainers only claim it is “PyPA recommended”, and PEP 453 is extremely careful to only say “officially recommended” (by CPython core maintainers). I

To be pedantic, Python has exactly zero official package managers. Nothing in packaging is “official” (well maybe distutils is but it’s also officially deprecated).

The compile time depends largely on dependencies. If you have OpenSSL, zlib, and whatnot pre-installed (either via Homebrew or self-compiled and specified with environment variables), the compile time is close to 5 minutes. If you don’t, by

I suppose you actually mean close source? Because it’s trivial to distribute proprietary code on PyPI: Just say that in your license. There is no true “close source” for pure Python programs, but if obfuscation is close enough, you can choo

This is similar to the static vs dynamic linking debate. It’s easiest to deploy things if they are all self contained, but Linux distros have a strong tradition of dynamic linking and really don’t want to have (say) two separate paycopg2 in

To supplement, the “root” issue of the whole situation is some users are actively installing things into that system env. So the PEP is providing a mechanism for pip to detect it’s being used to install things into a system env and have a c
