can't you use a comet connection with something like orbited instead of polling? i wouldn't trust polling via HTTP GET with "real-time accurately synchronized countdown" -- a couple of small delays can skew your entire countdown, and delay

just note that you can't nicely reverse proxy 3rd-party blogs (tumblr, posterous, hosted wordpress) if they aren't using relative links (which they probably aren't); and even if they are your server will still be bearing the bandwidth load

bad implementation? asynchronous IO is more efficient than threading simply because it eliminates overhead. i don't think anything was "switched back to" async IO as if threading was supposed to solve some sort of problem with it.
