"American anti-gambling laws." It's more than that. The U.S. actually prosecuted executives of foreign online gaming companies for providing services to U.S. citizens. The problem is not that American citizens fall under U.S.

"Patreon is the U.S. and not subject to European laws." What makes you think this is true? Why can't Americans play poker online? Why does Amazon have to collect state taxes for states they don't have a physical presence

I would suggest that any time you try to cut out significant profit out of an established system, you've got the whole system working against you. Sure, it can be done. But everything will be more difficult. And you'll have to do

Actually, if you think of Uber cars as "mobile showrooms", there's a million opportunities to push real or digital products to the passengers in the back. Like Skymall for cars. Wait, maybe Skymall isn't the best example

Would Patreon or Gittip (which has changed its name to something I can't recall at the moment) not work for this? In fact, Gittip's original mission was tips for open source projects.

There does seem to be a need for an "Internet fund". Pick 100 of the core free technologies that everyone relies on and pay people to maintain them.

I agree it should expire and require active effort (and some $ amount) to renew. That way, Mickey Mouse can still be under copyright but most other artistic works will be available for public use.
