The key problem here is a lack of accurate data. OSM is amazing, but is constantly getting improved and closer to realtime "ground truth." Historical OSM data is usually worse all-around, rather than "equally good, but as of

If your application allows for it, I also recommend checking out Protomaps / PMTiles. Brandon has some insanely cool work making a tile format and related infrastructure that scales nicely.

I can't speak for OP but their take sounded pretty city-focused. I live in a downtown that feels so overrun with these monstrous SUVs and what-have-you for no reason. I know they're useless because they're always empty and th

IANAL but from what I understand, folks will be able to use the current version of the software as it is currently licensed, forever. The author is making clear their intent to change the license on a certain date, at which point new versio

I was so excited for a sec thinking that the matched the prints somehow to one individual dinosaur! It's not exactly news that the fossil record matches on either side of the Atlantic, though still cool

I've been learning Rust and really enjoying it, but the primary downside (compared to C++) is the lack of access to the large, well-tested libraries that exist in C++. For example, my work would benefit from using the CGAL library [0],

I'm particularly excited about FUTO funding Immich [0], a photo management app similar to Google Photos. The money allowed the FUTO devs to go full-time [1] [0] https://immich.app/ [1] https://immich.app

This is the most Racket thing...it's a language designed for writing other languages so most problems are solved by creating a new DSL.

That is source available, not open source. The term "open-source" is widely used to describe software that is licensed using a specific set of software licenses that grant certain freedoms to users. You can read more here[0] [0]

Correction: Regeneron is the sponsor, it is the Society for Science that is responsible. When I was there the sponsor was Intel, so I didn't immediately recognize the meaning of "Regeneron"

I agree that research misconduct is different than what I'm describing. I think that students who conduct serious research with local universities (for example) should be celebrated. But I do think the issues are related in that Regene

I was a finalist at the 2017 ISEF and it was quite an experience. A lot of super smart kids there and we all had fun living it up in Los Angeles. There was a stark contrast between those of us who had designed our projects completely oursel

I was a bit surprised to walk onto a DC Metro car last weekend to find the walls plastered with ads for Mullvad. Just wanted to note that Mullvad is spending money on traditional advertising, as well as blog posts like this.

I see that this post was flagged, I am curious why and hope we can discuss that. I had not heard of this group at Google nor the story of their arrest/termination, and I found the account to be interesting and worthy of a spot on HN.
