Disagree. If one has physical access to your machine, they also have physical access to you. Practically everyone is vulnerable to rubber hose cryptanalysis.

It would fail, too. ‘CON’ has been a reserved name since the days of DOS (actually CP/M, though that doesn’t have direct lineage to Windows) where it acted as a device name for the console. You can still use it that way. In a CMD windo

China gets to project and grow their leadership in the EV space outside the Mainland while increasing their importance in a country that’s part of the US’s sphere of influence. Big win.

Seveneves is the only Stephenson book I haven’t reread, and it’s because I don’t want to encounter that event again. I suppose I understand why he made that choice, but I don’t have to like it.

The year of Linux on the laptop has yet to arrive for most of us. Windows and MacOS both offer better battery life, if for no other reason (and there are usually other reasons, like suspend/wake issues, graphics driver woes, etc.)

I believe they mean ACME provisioning and renewal isn't baked into nginx, i.e. you have to install certbot separately and run it daily from a cron job or systemd timer, whereas traefik and caddy handle this for you without additional s

There was some licensing drama[0] around BSD’s Broadcom bcm43xx driver. No idea if another driver was ever implemented as I’m not a BSD user. [0] https://lore.kernel.org/all/20070405163434.GA18477@gollum.na...

It’s not that your audio is being amplified, it’s that the VAD classifier is poorly tuned. The noise should never even reach the recognition stage. Whisper’s hallucinations are pretty severe, but are improved by adding VAD to its pipeline.

IIRC you could use pirated games on the PS1 by first booting it off an audio CD with a lot of tracks, then swapping the disk at a certain point in the boot process.

Great point. With the baseboards off, you can even look inside the wall (e.g. with a phone camera) for clear stud bays and power cables, potentially finding easier runs.

A plastic bag tied to pulling twine works really well and is less likely to get stuck than a ball or plunger. I always leave a length of twine in my conduits so I only have to use the vacuum method once.

a<>b is the preferred syntax in SQL. I'm pretty sure a!=b works everywhere these days, but that hasn't always been the case. (eta: didn't finish the thought - I'd assume SQL influenced Excel, since it's older.
