Well, the Assyrian Empire was doing better than ever after the Late Bronze Age Collapse.

> Yet you don't see people take such issue with terms like "Bronze Age Collapse," because these comments aren't coming from a consistent intellectual framework, but rather from people mindlessly repeating a shibboleth

Not sure how many users see it that way. I've always been annoyed with first-mover mods having perpetual control over subreddits (it's especially bad for e.g. some reddits named after countries, which are controlled either by angl

Engineering disasters (e.g. the FIU bridge, the Boeing 737 MAX, the Miami condo collapse, and now the Titan submersible) are rightly subjects of significant interest in the press in general and hacker news specifically. And rightly so - one

As the article mentions though, one of the issues with using carbon fiber for this is that unlike titanium, it weakens with each pressure test.

Thank you for explaining. I couldn't make heads or tail of what the article was saying, and most of the comments in this thread are discussing different problems with federated services, rather than specifically this problem with feder

Not at all though. I can use an email address from my own domain name and then switch email providers without losing the identity I have built up.

It's not centralization if you can set up an account tied to your own domain name (similar to an email address for your own domain) without needing to self-host an instance.

There's no gotcha. My account hit the rate-limit hours ago and twitter is no longer viewable when logged out, so I literally cannot view what the tweet you linked to is saying...

Flagged for linking to a tweet I can't view since you haven't written what it says

With a more normal 100 tweets viewed per minute, a verified user would hit the limit in an hour, which is quite low for the kind of power user that would purchase twitter blue.

Steve Huffman and Elon Musk both seem to be so mad about scraping (especially for ML training) that they're willing to make the user experience vastly worse for their users in pursuit of preventing scraping.

Rocks can be used to murder people by bashing them on the head. Maybe it's not the criminals we should be worried about so much as all the rocks out there on planet earth.

Using parental income as well as parental education level in admissions would have helped GP's father just fine without any need for race-based affirmative action.

Err yeah I mean that stiffness reduces the internal stress caused by external compression force. Stiffness increases the buckling load of a material.

The epoxy in carbon fiber makes it stiff. Stiffness helps reduce buckling loads.

I don't think it has much to do with refugees vs. holiday trip. Other stories of (potentially) trapped people such as the Thai soccer team or the Chilean miners received similar nonstop coverage and media attention.

The prices they're charging for API access are wildly disproportionate to the cost of the physical infrastructure required to run the services.
