I'm glad he hinted that there are a lot of people reverse telecommuting at their jobs. Even though companies usually try to stop this by monitoring their employees' desktop and network activity (which I think is wrong), it's nice to know p

I see your point, but I think looking for a new job/relationship now rather than later is actually better for both parties involved. Sure, the party who finds out last will feel hurt (possibly betrayed) in the short term, but it's much bett

I know that, in practice, this doesn't really help any, but employers that find out their employees are looking for another job and fire those employees because of it, are cutting their nose off to spite their face. If the employee was one

So why doesn't Microsoft just announce that they will no longer be supporting IE6? What are the companies who have IE6-only applications going to do? They'll have to upgrade or consciously continue to use an obsolete browser. Did they sig

What would have happened if Mint had said no, and then Intuit made a bigger offer to Wesabe (and they accepted)? People who were already used to using Intuit products might be tempted to try out Wesabe instead of Mint, making it that much

Hate to sound pedantic, but the Java example is a little off. java.sql.PreparedStatements have their parameters start at index 1, not 0. So the first "?" is parameter 1 and the second is parameter 2. It's one of the few places in Java whe

I didn't know the UK had a Monday Night Football. Well, with X-Men, they'll have a large pool of candidates for that 3rd announcer spot if Gruden gets another coaching gig.

As a user, yes, but as a developer, there's some really awesome stuff in this release (both from the perspectives of the apps being developed and from the tools used to build them). Can't wait.

Not all of business believes in more efficiency as you describe it. I'd argue that most IT departments are just as much a jobs program as NASA, and probably for a lot of the same reasons.

That's not what I was implying. I was talking about the over-protective parents and adults who try so hard to shield their children from the bad things in the world (a noble idea), that they may unintentionally fail to prepare them for suc

I agree about Ruby not belonging on that list. If anything my learning of Ruby (and then Rails) soured any remaining interest I had in Java development. I'd really be interested to know why ramoq thinks Ruby is less suitable than Java. I'l

I think this accurately describes everyday for me in an IT department: Windows-only, Java-only, enterprise vendor-driven web development that must work in IE6? HDD indeed.

It may seem obvious, but it's easier said than done. It's also very enticing to want to believe that a real shortcut exists, and there's plenty of writing out there in that vein. It's refreshing to have someone be honest enough with you to

I agree about DRM on books being bad. That's what I love about Pragmatic Programmers' e-books, I can get a plain PDF that I can read on any device that can read it.

I often find that when a boss is stuck in the dark ages of technology, the best route is to work around them. If they don't expicitly tell you how to do something, do it the way you want, but be prepared to fix it if something goes wrong.
