Yes, Microsoft = Mom's Robots. In the public eye, try to portray yourself as likable. While behind closed doors, the real Microsoft is revealed. Remember, at Microsoft, all buttons retaliate.

Congrats. I envy you. Someone may have asked this, and if so, could you point me to your response. Did you tell your corporate job that you were leaving to pursue your own startup when they asked why you were voluntarily leaving? I wonder

I wonder if that's common of consulting agencies. That would explain the triumvirate of crappy consultants that we had at work. I guess a way to combat it would be to publicize consulting agencies that are guilty of that sort of thing.

I'd really like to let my manager at work read your comment. He recently went to a local "Web 2.0" conference and was surprised by all the Apple laptops everyone else had (both attendees and presenters). Yet, he still continues to bury his

The French have more leisure time than Americans. It's just as much about what going on in your life stress-wise as it is about what you eat. We have much to learn about life-work balance from the rest of the world. It's unfortunate that

How'd this get on Hacker News? I've worked with open-source and proprietary enterprise portals and I can safely say this: they all suck. They're a pain to install, customize, develop for, maintain, intergrate, and scale. If there ever was

It doesn't matter what technologies you learned at college, high school, trade school, or from books. Whatever it is, it won't be enough anyway. You'll be expected to get to work, use what you know, and pick up what you have to. For the re

It seems like what IT really wants is trade school graduates. Someone who should be going to DeVry to learn the J2EE stack or .Net and is only doing so for the paycheck, not genuine interest in software development. When I was in college (1

I think the article gets it wrong at the end. Family Guy got resurrected because Cartoon Network's Adult Swim played the old episodes almost every night. This got a lot more of Family Guy's would-be target audience interested in the show.

Why does 37Signals only have the luxury of working less? I'm sure when they were starting out (for their consulting business, not Basecamp) they had to work hard. Maybe it doesn't feel like work so much when you really enjoy solving the pro

You only have to pay a $99 (more for enterprises) yearly fee to actually deploy native apps to the iPhone. You can download, develop, and test in the simulator iPhone code today for free.

Maybe a better article would have been: "Is your company ready for higher attrition rates when your most skilled workers leave because you won't let them use the tools they prefer?" Maybe the title's too long.

Then let the gas prices rise! So far, we're up to $4/gal here. Telecommuting FTW! I know I'd hate my job less if I could telecommute full-time. My equipment at home is better than what I have to work on at the office.

I think you're doing the right thing by doing a startup. Keep fighting the good fight. You have to do what makes you happy, which may not be what makes your mom happy. Remember, it's you who will have to live with your choices in life, no

How about the evidence of actual work produced? The facetime model is seriously broken. It doesn't promote productivity, it actually decreases it when employees figure out how to falsify the results. http://www.paulgraham.com/opensource.

It's true that you must pay $99, even if you're developing freeware. I don't know if it's per year, but probably. Part of the cost is for the encrypted certificate that apps need to be signed with in order to legitimately run on the iPhone

Back in the day, WebObjects Builder was like Interface Builder for the web. But now you have to use Eclipse for WebObjects development and NeXT/Apple's WebObjects tools are no longer being developed.
