Paper is a cross between a wiki and a google doc. It was based on https://hackpad.com/ from what I heard!

https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-open-source-Heroku-alter... has some more answers (I just added an answer). As of today, the list (in no particular order) is looking like: Convox, Flynn, Dies, Dokku, Tsuru, Apache Strat

Totally with you on this - all pretty valid points; but, I'd say Heroku does still work for a lot of people, especially if they can get past the cost (which, imho is worth it from a focus and time point of view).

Why not just use Heroku and actually build your product?

This sounds like classic engineer(s) talk; totally ignoring the human cost of setup, maint and ongoing development which is usually handled by an (expensive) ops team. It's not $5k vs $2k, it's $5k vs $2k + ops time.

This is super easy to get started with, plus really cheap storage wise. Query wise, it can get "expensive" (tbh, still cheap) if you do it badly. It's really fast.

I use: https://www.zerotier.com/ - it's commercial (nothing to do with me), works on Mac and Linux, plus is free for 10 hosts. Makes a private, secure, software defined network.
